Retrieving a Toy b4 greeting people?

Our 5 year Golden must have read the book about Golden temperaments--He exhibits every single trait attributed to Goldens.

One that has always puzzled me is his insistence on grabbing a toy, sock, whatever before he greets people. If I call Kyle (his name), he first looks around for a sock or a toy, grabs it and then comes to me. Does this with almost anyone he greets.

Does anyone know why Goldens do this and what they seem to be thinking in doing so? He doesn't drop the sock, toy as he comes to us, he just keeps it in his mouth. Often he will grab 2 or 3 items--a couple of socks, a toy and again just come over and keep them in house mouth.

Lucy has started that recently when Bart comes home later than she would like. She's always brought us toys when we've come home, but lately with Bart, she'll greet him with a mouthful of some stuffed toy and we'll hear this one, silly, deep growl. THEN she'll jump in his lap as soon as he sits down and shower him in kisses.

Aww, my Eli that I lost a few months ago always did that, but only for me. Whenever I came in the door he would grab his nearest toy and come to me. If there were none to be found he would frantically search all over the house to find something, anything!! It was one of my favorite traits about him and I miss it so. When I went to get him as a puppy his daddy was on the premises and he did it too, went and grabbed a huge fallen tree branch and drug it over to me. Guess he passed the trait on.

Bringing gifts. I like that explanation. No doubt its a sign of affection. But I still don't quite get it.

I started another thread about how our dog exhibits all the breed specific traits of Goldens and how my other dogs (this is our first Golden) didn't seem to have such strong inate characteristics that their breed might be known for.

Hair, drool and germs are a condiment in every golden household! When I would have people over for dinner I would just appologize in advace if they found a dog hair in the food! If they accepted another invite I would know that they didn't care either. When they would decline the second invite I knew the potential hair in the food might bother them! LOL

I think they do it because they were bred to retrieve. When I come home from work mine scrabbles around looking for something to bring outside to potty with him. He holds it while he pees, then runs around the yard and plays with it. Too cute.

Lacey does something similar to this. When we go visit a friend of mine and her Bichon, Lacey always manages to find a pig's ear (a chewie) on the floor. So for the rest of the walk home, including stopping to pee/poop, she's carrying the pig's ear in her mouth! She just won't put it down until we're "safely" back home where she proceeds to devour it in 5 mins!

I have three goldens and only one does it. My last golden Beau did the same thing. And one time when he lost most of his vision he started to grab the cat thinking it was his toy on the floor. The cat didnt think it was funny but we did. And she was fine. Just slobbered on.

Tucker does this all the time, especially when DH comes home from work. Before he actually goes over to greet him, he looks for the nearest toy, whether it be a tennis ball, stuffed toy, or a bumper. The other day he couldn't find any toys nearby, so he went and grabbed his blanket from his kennel and dragged it over to him.

my golden will pick up a toy to greet people she will search aroun d the rhouse till she finds one then she will greet the person who has come in making a kinda crying sound. i think its just the fact that they are goldens and there instinct is to retrieve to there people. also my golden will try to fit as many toys in her mouth as possible to try and please a bit more. if you take it off her she will only go get another toy till she is carmed down. its really cute!!

I will never forget the day it clicked with Lucky that he shouldn't nip at me when playing. He ran to me....rared up for that painful bite....stopped...turned completely around and grabbed a toy and ran back.

I realized then that my many weeks of replacing my skin with a toy really did work.

Now when he starts to play with me, he does the same thing. He lunges, stops, turns and gets a toy and smashes it in my tummy.

Ohhh yes yes. Vito does this to the extreme. If we are walking and someone comes up to say hi he tries to grab his leash or their clothes sometimes, LOL. He has gotten much better about that...

But at home he grabs nearest toy or shoe whenever we have guests or come home. Like Gibby, he also makes whining noises, grunts, and chewbaca sounds.

I'm pretty sure they only do that when you've raised them from puppyhood.

Aiyana had to have a toy in her mouth, if you were just talking to her... she had it when people came in the door, in the room, etc, always a toy close by (we called them her listening toys).

Layla is that way with her bankie.. yes she has a bankie and has to carry it every where. When I let her out of her crate in the morning, she brings the bankie out with her, takes it to the patio door, drops it... goes outside, comes back in picks up her bankie and hops on the couch. Her bankie has gotten really small though, it is nothing but a rag about 12"X12".

All the goldens I have had have done this. They always run and pick up a toy when someone comes over. Friends always think the boys want them to throw it since they are retrievers or are bringing it to them. Then the boys won't let go.
I think they pick it up because it calms them, like a pacifier. If they wanted to retrieve it, they'd drop it as they are trained retrievers.
