Just opened a new bag of Pro Plan this morning. Like all of the other bags over the past almost 30 years, it was just fine.
I opened a bag of Purina Pro Plan High Protein Puppy this week and it's fine. I had switched to a comparable, but more expensive brand last year. I thought I saw a difference the first month or two after switching one of my dogs, but in the long run there was no difference. I hate switching foods, but now we are back to Pro Plan. I feel like once every 10 years I start to think maybe there's something better, and then there just isn't.

I find it an interesting "coincidence ' that virtually everyone reporting this problem it's their first and only post on the forum 🤔

Taking a wild guess this is not necessarily a Purina issue, but one related to stock/storing of food. A few years ago, all the local petstores had a big problem with pantry moths. When you walked in the store, you could see them flying around. Once you get an infestation, it's very difficult to get rid of them. Same thing with people who bring home infested bird feed (like I did) or dog food. It can take a long time getting the moths out of your house!
How do worms get in the can that is sealed. I have a video where as I opened the Purina one essentials as I put Rascals wet food in his bowl I seen something move. Sure enough worms. They can cause my fur baby to get sick, not happening!! I pray over my fur baby and his food. Only GOD protected my fur child

Do you video yourself opening cans all the time? I have been feeding mostly Pro Plan from Chewy or Amazon for 7 years and have never seen worms or bugs.

I've seen some videos circulating online that Purina is having an issue with worms and black beatles in their food. Has anyone delt with this? Any other food recommendations?

TIA!
Yes!! I am COMPLETELY DISGUSTED WITH THIS ISSUE...WE JUST GOT HOME WITH ONE YEAR OLD PUPPY, GRABBED A BAG OF FOOD, POURED IT INTO puppy's bag? We knew something didn't look right & come to find out there were worms, that had larva & had eaten inside sides of the bag! We went back to store & exchanged it after opening the new bag!

Today we found out about our problem. We had a bag delivered from Amazon. We had it since Nov. 1 and just opened it. But lately we’ve had these little black beetles showing up randomly. And tonight I went to feed my dogs and saw these little white things on the food- specifically the chicken parts. Some were caved out and others we like little sacs. One of them had a worm that looked dead. And I opened a closed sac one and there was a a ALIVE WORM on the sac. We threw out the bag. But we’ve been having this bug problem since around when we got this bag. I don’t know if this has been in our other bags because I never really check the food I put in my dogs food- BECAUSE I ASSUME THERE WOULDNT BE WORMSSSS IN IT!!
but be careful with it…😭

You just got home with a 1 year old puppy? Poured it into the puppies bag? Is it a Golden Retriever? You got another bag of Purina, or a different brand?

Why not return it to Purina for investigation and to possibly get a refund?

So sorry I didn't see this sooner. We switched her to Blue Buffalo, chicken and brown rice. She loves this food and we have noticed that she is more energetic than ever before.
You switched to Blue Buffalo? Have you seen the issues with Blue Buffalo? There are actual reports to verify the issues.

I have no affiliation with Purina. I currently have three goldens, one is on Purina High Protein Puppy, one is on a Hills Science Diet food, and one is on a Royal Canin food currently. I feed whichever food works best for each dog, but I'm not gonna lie my life would be easier if I could go back to just feeding Purina 30/20 to everyone. I feel like this thread is simply being used to trash a food brand that many of us have used as a standard forever. Please feed your dogs whatever you want, but this is a Golden Retriever Forum and it's very suspicious that new members keep popping up to trash a dog food, especially to those of us that really study these things. If you want to convince anyone bring proof, such as a report where you returned the food and had it investigated. I would do that if I found worms and beetles in a bag of Purina. If this many of you were finding problems, and reporting it, there would be a news report.

I will not respond to this thread anymore. For anyone out there in the future reading this thread, and feeding Purina, if you see something wrong with it please call their quality control team and report the issue. I would even suggest you speak to their nutritionists if having an issue. I've fed it on and off for 25+ years and have had one bag during COVID that I thought had maybe been warehoused to long. I called, sent the bag back, they sent me a new bag. There were no bugs, worms, the color was off and it smelled a little strong. I was very happy with Purina's Professional response.

Years ago, I had a bag of Pro Plan that looked different (no bugs or larva just seemed like texture and color were not the usual). Purina replaced it and sent a postage paid box for me to send some to them for investigation. With so many people on this forum who feed Purina it seems odd to me too that these reports are not from regular forum members

I don't have a golden, but do have a love nug that I recently adopted. I've been feeding her Purina pro plan puppy and saw some in the airtight container I keep her food in (I also keep the larger, original bag tightly sealed after I open it.) So I know that's where it came from.
To my horror, after searching for roughly 5 minutes on Google and Reddit this seems to be a reocurring issue with Purina. Specifically Purina dry food purchased from Petsmart.
If I had to guess, they (Petsmart) are keeping product there for long amounts of time and have more in stock than they are able to sell in a timely manner.

YESSSSS!!!!!!! I just googled to see if this is an issue. I have larvae & bugs in mine & my dog has been eating on this same bag for 2 months cause she keeps getting sick & needing to go on a special diet!!! Now this makes me believe it's the food making her sick!!!!!!!!

Perhaps the people who join this forum strictly to comment on this thread could tell us what Purina's response was when you contacted them about the issue.
Thanks in advance.

Just found maggots or worms crawling in a new bag of Purina Pro Plan Sport I purchased last week at a local Petco. I emailed Purina and tagged them on a social media post. So I’ll see what their reply is and update. First issue I’ve ever had with the food. The best by date for the bag was May 2025 too.

in over 50 years of dog ownership and kibble feeding this is the FIRST time experience with worms in food. My dog started refusing to eat about 10 days ago and I thought it he was being picky. Bought a new brand of food and hes so happily eating now! Ive been using pro plan for sensitive stomachs. amazon has had it on sale for several months. No recourse as it’s past the 30 day return policy.

An actual known member reporting this holds some credibility. I appreciate you saying where you got it also.
