Just found maggots or worms crawling in a new bag of Purina Pro Plan Sport I purchased last week at a local Petco. I emailed Purina and tagged them on a social media post. So I’ll see what their reply is and update. First issue I’ve ever had with the food. The best by date for the bag was May 2025 too.
I would call their 1-800 number tomorrow, with the codes off the bag. It would be wonderful if you let us know their response.

It's really strange how fast everyone has disappeared when we've asked them what Purina's response was.....it's refreshing to see that Tpetty09 has actually contacted Purina, and I'm curious what their response is.
The interesting thing is that people complain about how kibble is processed at high temperatures. However, that kills any bugs/maggots/etc. that might be in the kibble during production. For this reason, it's a storage issue (at the pet store or during transport), not a manufacturer's issue.

So I already received a response from Purina and they said they already have sent me replacement coupons and additional discounts via regular mail. They just requested the manufacturing barcode as well as the blue best by section. I was a little freaked out by the maggots or worms still not exactly sure what they were I didn’t take photos of the barcodes before throwing the bag out. I do have photos from inside the bag showing some of the bugs. I still had the receipt though so that should help narrow it down. I’m not sure if anyone else uses the Sport 26/16, but they changed the kibble size and front of packaging within the past year or 2 I believe. I remember when I purchased it I was surprised to see the older packaging as shown in the thumbnail I attached. If anyone is interested in the photos from inside the bag I can post those too.

I have a senior German Shepherd & found the live worms in his shredded ProPlan food....purina sent me coupons too. Today I found live worms in his other Purina food-large breed & puppy food! At a loss now! Glad I found your thread! Obviously something at Purina isnt right! I can understand 1 bad bag, but this is sickening!

Where did you purchase it?

At a Menards near me......really puzzling! The girls at the return counter said it happens all the time!
Thanks for letting us know. It is puzzling. I always get mine from Chewy or Amazon and I have never seen worms or moths. For years I got large Breed Chicken and Rice and since April I get PPP All Life Stages Sport 30/20 Chicken or Salmon. It seems like people are finding it from many sources but you would think, if for example, it is from Amazon why are so many also getting bags that are fine.

We have been buying it there for YEARS! (We paid big money for dog food for our 1st German Shepherd-he was poisoned by the IAMS food recall years ago!!! It actually killed him) I thought Purina would be a better option)
I don't want to switch his food-but I also don't want him eating worms!
I think it is a problem at the manufacturing plant

Thanks for this information. I, too, have fed PPP Salmon for years without issue and am now having trouble with my current bag. It looks like pantry moth larvae. The kibble is pretty loaded, and I’m afraid my back-up bags may have them, as well.

I buy from Chew and Amazon, and the food is stored inside, away from any other food items. I remembered this thread, and came here looking to see what other folks have done as a remedy.

I’ll update after I’ve contacted Purina.
Thanks

I live in Illinois & purchase my Purina Pro Plan from Menards (home inprovement store). I have been buying it for years with no issues.....discovered a wormy bag this Novemeber! My dog had eaten half the bag! It was shredded chicken
I have received coupons from Purina, but discovered more worms in another bag of Pro Plan (Puppy)
I have an underweight German Shephard, and we mix 3 different kind of ProPlan

I completely forgot about them changing the bags until you reminded me! I wonder if they changed anything else at the plant to cause this widespread issue?

I've seen some videos circulating online that Purina is having an issue with worms and black beatles in their food. Has anyone delt with this? Any other food recommendations?

TIA!
i’ve had two different bags of purina pro plan have worms. unsure if its fly larvae or anything. these worms dont like sunlight. they are in side the chicken chunks and not the kibble. they leave a white residue. unsure if its from the store or the manufacturer. called purina and they apologize and sent a coupon for more pro plan (which i dont plan on buying ever again)

I'm glad you called Purina too! I spoke at length with them about this problem, and they do seem concerned. I went through the bag of large breed kibble (that I have not found any worms in) scoop by scoop. But I did have infestation in the chicken chunks exactly as you stated & found worms in the puppy kibble. I put the current bag of dog food outside for 3 days during our below zero weather. I wanted to change food, but have read similar stories online about other food! Going to keep a CLOSE eye on the dog food. I told Purina to GOOGLE worms in food, because it is all over the internet.........very upset this has happened. I am also purchasing from a smaller pet food store that does not have a huge warehouse of food stored. My wormy bag came from California

Yes, this is the sad truth as I just returned two bads of Purina pro choice FOR MY CAT,purchased at two different pet stores.

When i asked both customer service representative if they have ever had experienced this before they both said yes and mostly From the Purna pro choice.
1 BAG HAD A MAGET WARM AND THE OUTHER BAG HAD WHITE WEBS INSIDE.

We get our Purina pro plan sensitive stomach the salmon one from Amazon and I just noticed worms like they're brown worms with black tips little tiny ones in our pro plan food So what other brand should I use

I have fed and do feed a lot of Pro Plan and have never seen it.
That's all we've ever fed is Purina pro plan and this is the first time I found it in my dog food I dump it into a container and it sets it and it sets in a freezer cold room and I was feeding my dog and I go what is that in that there's nothing in there but the Purina this morning and I'm just sick that I've been giving him words it's a good thing he takes that tri-way thing because that kills worms but I'm going to call purina today

I've had this problem 3 separate times. I buy proplan sport. Each time there were both small beetle type creatures and maggot larvae throughout the dry kibble. All 3 times it was bought through PetSense a Tractor Supply partner. I've bought about 3 dozen bags at this store over time. But the maggot bags were already infested upon opening. Definitely not a pantry or storage option on my end. Just took a bag back yesterday.

I have been feeding my dog Purina Pro plan Salmon and rice for sensitive stomach for years. Recently, the last 3 bags have had larva, beetles and now I’ve discover something else. Several pieces of kibble have a white substance on them. I’ve gotten into the habit of placing by newly purchased bags into my freezer for several days , to kill any bugs or larva. But this new white substance on the kibble is the last straw.. I’m switching food

You need to contact Purina. They will likely ask you to send them a sample so they can analyze it.

I find it humorous that people complain that kibble is highly processed and extruded at a high temperature. This allegedly kills nutrients (it doesn't) and kills all manner other critters that might be found in it. They simple can't survive the way kibble is processed.
Therefore....it's virtually always a storage problem. Contact the store where you purchased it. And, as suggested, send a sample to Purina for their analysis.

I always thought that too, until I witnessed first hand the worms hatching out of the shredded dog food. I posted pics on this site previously of the worms IN THE DOG FOOD.......Purina did not ask for a sample when I called them. It took a simple google search to find others with same problem I had.
Do not be so quick to judge.....this is not a storage problem-it is a manufacturing issue
