Was looking around on google to see if my dog’s food was recalled and I came across this thread. I buy the Purina food and have for awhile now but I will no longer be buying it as I just found that it’s infested with tiny worms… is there any dog food that can actually be trusted these days.. ugh..

Some dog foods have larva in it as a protein source. Purina pro plan is one of them and listed as an ingredient. I bought a bag because I thought my dogs needed more protein to help with skin issues. I personally don't want to feed it to my dogs so I'm going back to Purina pure balance. It's all one size and color so I feel good about that food.

I found these disgusting larvae and bugs in my pup’s PurinaOne Salmon Food. Are there any known health issues caused by this food? My poor dog ate this food for a week before I noticed the bugs. Thankfully I only use the dry food as a back up so it’s not her main source of food. However I’m worried because she ate this crap. It is unbelievable that this has been a known issue for years and Purina is not recalling their trash quality food. This garbage is the most expensive verity they make and it’s not much cheaper than other high quality brands. This is not a storage issue… this is a quality control issue. I’ve had pets for years and this has never happened before.

This just happened to the bag I got in May 2024!! We found white spots on the food that ended up having worms inside it. We were suggested to freeze the bag as it would kill any worms/larvae so we did. We could only fit half the bag in the freezer so once we ran out of the frozen purina food that we still picked through, I went to the original bag to freeze the remainder. No longer worms but now beetles in the food. I have pictures and videos but dont know how to post them here!
I noticed little white spots on the kibble. Never seen before. Now I can see larvae and I have little black beetles. Never seen anything like this. Got from Petco. 47 pound bag expires Oct 2025.

Yeah, I moved away from Purina after one too many bags with maggots (puke). The first one I thought it was a fluke. The second I thought it was maybe a store issue. On the third one (from a different distributor), when I went back to the store to complain, the cashier advised me to open a bag and check before taking the replacement home and sure enough, the newly opened bag was also full of them - that was FOUR BAGS!

just curiuos- what did you switch too? were these the pro plan bags

I just had this happen to me this week. I've been feeding Pro plan shredded chicken and rice for 8 years, dogs have been on pro plan since they started eating kibble. Pet Supplies Plus said they have this issue all the time, and only Pro Plan dog food, not any other Purina. They said Purina is aware of it but won't do anything about it. If they could not carry it, they wouldn't. Manager said that they are doing audits on the food, but I was unclear if that was them or Purina. I called Purina and they swore up and down that they have the highest standards, etc and took them 2.2 seconds to offer me coupons.

We feed our pup Purina One Plus joint health and going through the same problem. A month ago when I saw the little worms I also thought it was a fluke. We got a new container, a new bag, and dewormed her. Well, needless to say the worms are now in this bag also. I didn't notice any larvae when we poured the bag into the new sealed container. We have used this brand for years with our dogs and have never had this problem. Now, we are also switching brands, purchasing somewhere other than Fleet Farm, and hoping for the best!

I’ve been a Purina customer for many years. Never an issue until around May 2024. We have a 6 yo Pyrenees we feed a Victor large breed food mixed with Purina One chicken and rice. We purchase Purina One from Kroger or HEB and never had an issue. We also have a Pyrenees puppy. We feed her Purina Pro Plan chicken and rice, large breed puppy mixed with Purina Pro Plan lamb and rice, puppy food. We purchase these from Petco and these are the bags that have had larvae/moths. But after reading all the posts, it seems it’s not specific to the flavor, breed size or purchase location but is a Purina issue. Time to part ways with Purina.

I have fed PPP for about 10 years now and I’ve never had an issuue with bugs or anything else. All of my dogs have stayed very healthy, including my Berner, until just recently with Zoey’s Mast Cell scare. (She’s a two year old golden.)

Yes. I have been feeding Purina one to my dogs for years. Opened a new bag into a air tight sealed container last night. Came home from work, scooped one scoop, took the second one n saw something moving in it. A little black beetle. Went back to the food container where I dumped the bag of food, scooped around in it n found multiple black beetle insects. Dont know what they are, but tossed the whole container in the dumpster outside. Why are there insects in my pets food? Such a trusted brand for many years. I will never buy again. I wouldn't even give it to my pet it was free. Purina... a disappointment. I'll spend a few bucks more to make sure my dog get quality, not bug infested garbage.
what did you switch to

A few months ago I bought a couple bags of Dog Chow and both bags had worms and webs and some kind of moth looking bug. I reported it to Purina and they sent me vouchers for Beneful. The first bag was fine. The second one had worms and webs just like the Dog Chow. I am absolutely disgusted and will never buy their products again.

Just opened a new bag of Pro Plan this morning. Like all of the other bags over the past almost 30 years, it was just fine.
