There are far too many Willow's out there. It is an extremely popular female name. I would keep thinking on that one. Love the name Casper for a boy. That is very unique! My girls are Rundle and Summit - mountain themed. I love picking a name that I already associate with positivity.

Haha that sure would be fun! Thanks for your advice. I don't really know for a girl dog name, I keep on changing my mind (lol). I am going to keep on thinking about it (I got a year wait after all). Will let everyone know when I finally got one! I think Casper is final for a boy dog name though!

But, I also agree with Dunmar. If you like Willow, then go with Willow. Personally, I like having dogs that have less commonly used names.

 

If we had gotten a girl, my top two choices were Primrose and Sailor. Still might keep those top of mind if we ever think about getting another dog in the future

I find it hard to give suggestions without knowing more about you - what are your favourite people, places, activities, things, shows etc. This is what I use to inspire names. Also important to note, is some breeders have litter themes - maybe you want their registered name/call name to go along with the litter theme.

 

Thank you for the reply! I would really like names that have a fun meaning to them and are inspired by popular shows/movies. For example, I got Casper from Casper the Friendly Ghost. It would also be cool to have a name that can be a boy and girl name. Sport-themed (swimming, tennis, and running) and nature-themed names would also be also nice. I just like names with a certain ring to them, like the name Casper. Also, the litter theme named would be a good idea, but my litter is not even born yet so I can't think of those names yet. I am like 3pebs3, I tried to go with names that I associate with happy things! For some reason my happy “thing” was movies/tv characters, so most of mine are tv related. To share a few:

Boys-
-Sully (Monsters Inc. (and actually someone recently joined with the name James P Sullivan and it made me laugh))
-Booth (character from TV show Bones)
-Lance/Lancelot (also a character from Bones)
-Chandler (Chandler Bing from Friends)

Girls-
-Ellie (no inspiration from Tv, but I met a cute corgi named Ellie and she was amazing)
-Poppy (from the movie Trolls)

Either gender
Remy (Ratatouille)
Beckett (last name of character from TV show Castle)

My litter theme is cowboys/cowgirls, and while it’s not required that the call name is directly associated with the registered name, I love love love when people have great ones that are associated. If it’s too hard to make them link up, it’s also fun to just come up with two names!
I’m trying to hold out on deciding until I see my puppy on pickup day in case one name just feels better, but I’m getting tired of scheduling all my vet appointments for Puppy [Last Name], so I might just have to commit beforehand 😂

I am going to think over all these names, they are all so great! I think when I meet my puppy, even if I have a prepared name I am just going to go with whatever one seems the best. But I love to prepare because waiting is so hard! Oooh, what a fun theme. If I was trying to connect the names to your theme, I would do Lassie for girl and Dylan or maybe Austin for boy. Actually, Lassie is on my list for girl dog names what a coincidence, (lol). LOL, well when you get your puppy scheduling all those vet appointments will be worth it!

I'm a big fan of Diana Gabaldon's "Outlander" novels, which are set in Scotland. Since that's where the GR breed originated, it only seemed reasonable to name our dogs after my favorite Scottish characters from the books. So, Malcolm was our first Golden. Our second is named Hamish. I also have a black Lab named Fergus. I agree that you should choose names that have happy associations! I love the names Casper and Willow, btw. I know at least two very sweet Willows but haven't met a Casper yet.

 

I've named 31 puppies. My advice - go with your first instinct and names that you like - even if others don't.

For what it's worth, I named a puppy from my first litter Willow.

This! there will always be someone who likes your backup name instead of the plan A name, but it’s not their decision. If they like it, they can name their dog that name. Go with whatever name you want, it’s your puppy!

 

As we had the opportunity to do so this time around, I prefer having a few options in mind and choosing the final name after meeting and spending some time with the puppy. That way I can match the personality to the name.

Thanks for the advice everyone! I will take it all to consideration and in the end name my puppy the name I want! I will have a couple of names and when I meet the puppy I will choose the one that fits best.

 

For me, I usually had a few names I liked but it wasn't until I met the dog did I know which one fit or suited them.

 

I would love it if more people named there dogs common names. Like Beth, Sarah, Marg ect.

LOL I love it too. I know a dog named Fred but until I started looking for breeders, he was the only “human” named dog that I knew. Some of the breeders I looked at had names like Hannah, Nikki, Jessie, Whitney. Makes me smile
