I did a quick search and here is a recipe I found.

"I mixed together what I had on hand: a (almost full) qt bottle of hydrogen peroxide with a (almost full) 1 lb box of baking soda and a squirt of dishwashing detergent. I put Brooks in the shower BUT DIDN'T WET HIM WITH WATER and poured/smeared that all over his fur.
Then we closed Brooks in the bathroom, drove to the store and bought more stuff for the second application: hydrogen peroxide, baking soda, and Dawn (original) dishwashing liquid.
I also purchased some (original) Scope mouthwash which I put in a sprayer bottle and spritzed it all over him after I had made the second application of the baking soda/Hyd. Perox/dishwash deterg. mix.
I didn't put any water on him between the first and second applications. After the second, I left him in the bathroom (by then it was 4 am). I used Odoban all over the house-on the floors and on the furniture he had brushed against when he first came in.
At 6;30 I got him in the shower (at this point he was pretty dismal in mood and didn't want to go into the shower) and I shampooed him with an antimicrobial shampoo.
Then I cleaned all the walls and the floors in the bathroom (he shook off with all that gunky baking soda stuff).
Then at 10:30, I went to work!"

I've used cider vinegar on occassion and that has worked.

2 cups Hydrogen Peroxide
2 cups of White Vinegar
2 Tablespoons of Baking Soda
1 Tablespoon of liquid soap (Dawn dishwashing soap works well)
1 Gallon of warm water

Mix it all in a pail (not a closed container), dunk a sponge in it and bath the dog. Try not to get mixture in the dog’s ear canals or eyes.
Let sit for 5 minutes…rinse well.

Lol. Never had this problem myself but heard from a friend that using tomatosauce works too. Her dog had a run in with a polecat. Good luck!
I understand that all the tomato sauce does is stop our noses from smelling it so bad. Doesn't do anything for the actual skunk spray.

Here's my recipe.....................

Call Pet Smart. They have some shampoo that works great and then I don't have to deal with it. When Duke got sprayed full in the face and in his mouth that's what we did. He pooped skunk spray. It was horrible! Cole has not had the joy of meeting a skunk - yay!

Thanks for the responses! I know she tried vinegar, baking soda and dish soap. No hydrogen peroxide though...and he was still stinky. I passed along the "recipes" though.

Well, this won't work for your friend, but I live so close to my vet I'd be inclined to walk Toby right down there and ask the groomers to do a deskunking bath asap, if not sooner. If they aren't open, I guess I'll sleep at their entrance with Toby until they do!

I hope we never experience this....:yuck:

Copper's Mom has a recipe but I think it's what's been posted above.

Skunks!

My two kids at the Bridge, Smooch and Snobear met up with a skunk in October 2009-right around Halloween. We brought them right into the house and got them one by one, into the tub.

We did a bath with Dawn Dishwashing Liquid. Later, we found out about the mixture that you have all mentioned.

I have to tell you that I think we smelled skunk for a month!
NEXT TIME I think I would try taking them to the vet or Petsmart to get the Deskunking bath! I think the smell will linger anyway, because I think the smell gets in your nostrils, and you can't help but smell it.

It did lighten Lexi's coat (the red-head) just a bit...more like highlights...but she was given maaaany baths!:doh:
Didnt notice any diff to Liberty (the blonde)....

it was not permanent...and unless the dog is being shown in conformation....I would rather have a dog with a few highlights that will fade then the smell of skunk! LOL!!
The dog will re-perfume for a good 6 weeks everything (s)he gets wet...

Don't forget to switch out the collars for a while. Collars will pick up the scent even after the dog has been bathed the first couple of times. I'm sure you have several you can switch out. I remember going into a store a couple of days after washing a skunked dog and someone in the line behind me mentioning that they could smell skunk. I must have become oblivious of the odor on ME.

I used tomato juice to bathe our lab at 3:00 a.m. Not tomato sauce. And it does neutralize the odor. But then you have to wash it out, too. It was summer, so I took her to the outside kennel run and left her there till morning. By then, the odor was gone and a shampoo removed the tomato juice. But she was a sorry looking mess with that tomato juice in her coat.
