I have a 6 month golden retriever and I am sick of walking him. In the house it is reasonably established that we are the "pack leaders" or whatever you want to call it. He has restricted access to the other rooms, he does not sleep in our bed, he eats his own food at set times (not while we eat or before we eat). etc. So generally, inside the house he is a great dog. Doesn't bark, doesn't whine (we made sure to ignore this when we first got him), and as he often lays on his back while we play, I feel he understands that we are dominant and he is naturally quite passive. I don't mean that we 'assert' our dominance, we are very very loving and sweet, and he is a happy loved goofball. I just mean, in the house I feel we give the right structure, and it shows in his patient and intelligent nature while inside. There's no problems in the house and he is a great dog and very intelligent.
However, when we are out for a walk it's like he is a different creature. He is a heavy scavenger, and although we have harnesses that 'stop pulling' as we clip them at the front of his chest, he now always pulls. I've used an extendable leash so at least if it is extended then he is not pulling and for a while that worked. Although he walked a few paces ahead of me, he never went too far and generally the freedom made him listen more. But now he is even pulling beyond the length of that! When off-leash, he does not come back. He has an obsession with other dogs, and if he spots one, he will run to them even a mile away, and not come back. He'll start walking with the other family so he can stick with the dogs. It angers me so much because I have to reluctantly come after him in the end. I used to have dogs that strayed and ran and 'did their thing' but they never had this total obsession with other *dogs*. It was just that they liked to explore the area.
Although he understands 'leave it' in the house, and drop it. Outside this is not the case. If he grabs a piece of bread from the floor, if I say leave it or drop inside, he listens immediately, but outside he has started just doing nothing. Eventually he will eat it quickly. Before when we first got him, I mistakenly would take the piece of bread from his mouth because I did not know (I thought I was teaching him the right thing), but this quickly resulted in him becoming possessive over his food. For a few weeks he starts growling at his food bowl, and became weird outside when he found food. He would run and hide, or growl and bark at us if we were near. (Which makes sense). So I stopped reaching for it, I hand fed him for a while until he learned to trust us again, and now he's all good. So now, I don't reach out of course and he listened once again when I said leave it, but recently if I say 'drop it' or 'leave it' outside of the house, it is like he suddenly doesn't take me seriously, even if he is on the leash, when before he would. The problems seem to arise when he is outside!
I am sick of not being heard outside of the house and especially of being dragged around. I am only a small young woman, he can easily throw me when he is older and heavier, even with harness on. I don't know what to do. Inside he is literally an angel, but when we go outside it's like he takes the piss out of me. I can't walk him, and I can't control him off leash, but at least before he wasn't so bad on the leash. What has happened? and what can I do about his total obsession with other dogs?... I can't keep chasing him around like some idiot. It's not that he is not intelligent, it's that as soon as we are outside it's like he's stopped caring about what I say or do. Even when I have treats, he's stopped caring about that! (and I mean even if it's chicken). I want to take him to one of those intensive training courses where they take him and just do their thing.. has anyone else done this? Has it worked? So frustrated!
