Hello!

Just curious if anyone adds sardines or little fishes to their dogs food? Do you buy them at the grocery store and give them from the can? Im assuming you would buy like sardines in water with no addded salt? or do you go to a pet store and get them? Is it even sardines people add? LOL. Clearly very clueless about this!

Any information is helpful thank you! :p

Also, I feed raw already and I know there are many haters on this, but it works for me and my dog so please no hate on that lol.

Do you find your dogs teeth are better on the raw diet? My only complaint with Purina pro plan kibbles is that his teeth gave some build up at only two years old, and we brush them at least once a week! We do give apples and other non pet food things but I’m just curious what your raw experience is like. Thank you!

We don’t feed raw, but I like to give ranger some treats and snacks that are not pet food. We do this for my cat as well. I have found raw frozen sardines and anchovies at the Asian market, no salt just the fish. They come packaged in a bag, not canned. I also like making treats with them as pet store treats are expensive and full of junk ingredients. I found a great recipe for treats with cooked sweet potato and the fish of your choice-we like sardines, mash them together, make little meatballs out of them, and cook in the dehydrator. He loves them and they are healthy. It’s hard to find canned sardines that have no salt, but if you don’t give a whole can at once I think the salt is ok. Sardines naturally have salt, so you’ll never find them with 0 grams of salt anyway

All of my dogs are raw fed and have been for many years. Sardines, as well as other oily fish, are part of their regular diet. I order my fish from Raw Feeding Miami, and my tiny dogs get smelts. I also rotate herring in with the bigger dogs, and mackerel, but they're harder to come by. Whole fish are usually available at Asian markets and such and are really really good for your dog.

I used to give sardines to my Charlie. It was Gold Seal brand wild sardines in spring water, usually 5 fish in a can. I would split on 2 snacks, 1 can per week. He was picky and didn't like other brands, I tried. Other fish: sockeye salmon only or fresh lake fish, catch my husband would bring home.
Sardines were highly recommended by our vet even in higher dose than 1 can per week, but Charlie was also on 1000mg(?) Omega 3 pills so 1 can was okey for him.

The Trader Joe's can is great. I get that and feed Sierra sardines throughout the week. She goes through a can a week. She also gets other fresh food through the week: eggs, sprouts or micro greens, berries, fermented goats milk, bone broth, mushrooms (not all each day of course).

She gets a raw topper over kibble in the morning, Honest Kitchen at dinner. She also gets frozen turkey or duck necks. She is 20 months are her teeth are clean.

I feed mine sardines every once in while. They always get some kind of "real" food added to their dog food. I just use the cheapest sardines at the grocery store. Obviously not the kind packed in mustard or hot sauce. I usually get the ones packed in oil, because those are my favorite and one or two of the sardines goes to me.

Sometimes I give them tuna, but they don't seem to like tuna as much as sardines. I think their favorite fish is salmon. I buy the canned salmon when it's on sale and spread a can out over several days. Side note: NEVER feed raw salmon to a dog. Salmon can carry a parasite that can be fatal to dogs.

We get cases of sardines in olive oil at Costco when they go on sale. Twice a week a can is split between our two goldens. Olive oil has many of the same benefits for dogs as it does for humans, so I don’t sweat what the fish are packed in
