I can't take seeing this anymore. My stupid neighbors don't let there dog out to go potty, often for two days and I have seen up to three days. He is a very large dog. Could he possibly hold it that long? I have seen when they do take him out he cannot even make it down the steps before he starts to pee and poo. It is killing me to see this poor dog treated this way. He has what is required by law. Shelter when he is outside, food and water. I don't know what to do. Any suggestions?

I don't know where you're located, unfortunately, but I'm pulling this from my local Animal Control web site. You might try googling "(your city/county) animal control" and check out their Law section. (The bolding below is mine)

In general, animal cruelty includes every act, omission, or neglect whereby unnecessary or unjustifiable physical pain or suffering is caused or permitted Animal cruelty may be the result of the failure to provide some necessary item for an animal, such as food, water, shelter, or veterinary care, or it may be caused by an intentional act of inflicting something harmful or painful to an animal, such as beating, kicking, choking, etc. Both can be illegal acts punishable by imprisonment or fine.
Sounds like a case of animal cruelty to me. Having to hold it for that long? Granted, it's POSSIBLE they allow the dog to use the restroom indoors, but I doubt it...

Thanks. I doubt they are letting him go inside but you never know. That is part of my problem. They could say I let him out at night and I wouldn't have proof they don't. I just know I don't see him out for days at a time. I am home all day so I see what is going on.

That is so sad! What if you offered to walk him, say you need the exercise or miss your dog?

I bet the dog is going inside the house.:( Poor fella.

My dogs are so use to going out every 2-3 hours that they would most likely go inside the house if we missed taking them out. It's so easy letting a dog out even if it means taking them on a leash. You have to wonder what else is going on behind closed doors.

I have a had a major neck injury that caused me to become disabled and a part time wheelchair. This hasn't stopped me from taking my girls out. If it did, I'd install a dog door for them and put up a fence if needed.

I don't know if you can prove anything to animal control, but you can always try. Give them a call and report animal cruelty. I've called 911(before my injury) before on a dog living in a closed shed without windows, air flow, ect.... It would bark fiercely when I would run by their house. The owners had a really nice and big home too, there was no reason for the dog being locked in a dark shed. Animal control must of taken action since the dog wasn't there a week or two later.

I also wonder what is going on behind closed doors. She has a 4 or 5 year old son that I have only seen outside about 10 times in 4 years.

I like Karen's idea. They should get a subtle hint that you notice dog has not been out yet you are being nice about it.

I know exactly what you mean. I lost a dog to cancer and left a part time job to be home with him. When I see someone with a dog especially older and they leave it tied up outside it breaks my heart. I cannot imagine any dog being able to hold themselves. I've had dogs alone for 12 hours a few times when I got caught in a snowstorm and was a nervous wreck worrying about the dog. Good luck.

I personally don't know a dog that can hold it for three days. He has to go inside, maybe he is locked up somewhere inside.
You can always check with Animal Control and tell them what you observed. Usually, animal control will not give out your name and the call remains anonymous.

He looks ok as far as I can see from the distance I am away. I do wonder if they give him food or water in the home. He is mighty thirsty when they tie him out. So if I report them they will know it is me. That stinks because I have to live next to them. I guess it just needs to be done. If they hate me so be it. I only care about the dog. They certainly are not people I would ever want as friends. I tried to help them so I payed for and gave him his first distemper, parvo shot when he was a pup. He has not had anymore vaccinations. People like this just tick me off.

Am I understanding that he doesn't go out to potty at all for 2-3 days? Cause hat in first took it as is for the past 2-3 days they haven't let the dog out often.

If its the latter, what is often enough? Bear goes outside to potty maybe 4 times a day. Maybe more.

If its really not for 2-3 days, the dog must be peeing inside or somewhere else. I don't think anything can hold it that long unless they are dehydrated.

I reported a neighbor once. I heard him yelling at the dog, then saw him drag it behind the house, then I heard the dog yelping. *shudder* I just can't even imagine.

On another note, 2-3 days is obviously way too long and completely unacceptable, but Kea is the first dog I've had who won't do her business right away when she goes outside. Sometimes she just doesn't seem to have to go. She is out on a short walk at least 3 times per day but usually only actually "goes" twice. And sometimes she only poops once a day, if that!

Just an update. I have been talking to some of my neighbors and we are all keeping an eye on what is going on. I do not know if he is going in the house but I see very often he doesn't get chained out for 2 to 3 days. As I said when they are putting him out he cannot even make it down the steps and he is peeing. Then he poops right away and often has the diarrhea. I now have people to help me watch and go with if we feel they need to be turned in.

I highly doubt animal authorities will do anything to help this dog. They gave by butt hole uncle his dogs back time and again. And he was doing the same thing as your neighbor. FYI- He lives in a doggie litter box!

Has anyone talked to the neighbors? Just stop over when they are out and chat a bit? I'd tell them straight out (making like I'm laughing at myself) that I never see their dog outside for potty outings or something like that.

It doesn't necessarily sound like neglect - unless there are other signs? Is the dog in distress when he's outside? Showing signs of fear or weakness? When he's tied outside (that sounds like he's let outside?), is he given access to water?

They might be getting the dog outside for potty in the early AM or late PM hours and you just haven't noticed? Like before I switched to my current job, Jacks and Bert were going out for potty at 5AM. That was out to the front bushes and then back inside - barely out there 30 seconds. 45 seconds if Jacks had to poop too.

Thank you so much for the update, I've been worried. Please let us know how it goes. Maybe if you can call Animal Control with multiple people verifying the same story it'll have more clout.
