Grapes are poisonous but are grapevines?

Luna loves to rip out sections of a wild grapevine in our yard and prance around with it then chew it to pieces. The vine has never actually produced grapes so I wasn’t too worried about it but I can’t find anything authoritative to clarify if grapevine is also poisonous to dogs? Does anyone know?

Unfortunately, researchers haven't yet figured out a lot around the toxicity of grapes and raisins for dogs - including why some dogs can eat them and be fine, while others wind up with kidney failure. They also are not positive what part of the grape causes the toxicity. If it were me, I'd play it safe and remove the grape vines from your yard.

My Lucy ate grapes one day when I was home. I called my vet and she said use hydrogen peroxide to induce vomiting. So I did. She had very recently ingested the grapes, so I was able to get them out of her stomach. A few days later, she ate a huge bunch of grapes during the night. Since they had been in her system for awhile, there was no point in giving her hydrogen peroxide again. She ultimately had no problems. She's the only golden that I've owned that ate grapes. Just like Sweet Girl said, there is no way of knowing which dogs find grapes toxic and others not.

Thanks. I think we will remove it to be on the safe side.

If anyone ever funds the research it'll probably turn out that some dogs produce a certain enzyme that allows them to process an otherwise toxic compound in grapes and other dogs don't produce that enzyme.
