It would be considered a fail in a hunt test. Goldens aren't supposed to point, they are supposed to flush hard.
But since they felt it necessary to write that into the rules, that tells you that some do point.

Interesting, I don’t know much about Hunt Tests other than her Dad’s side has a litany of Master Hunt titles on their names.

So far it seems to just be planted chukars before they move, once they move she on top of them trying to catch them. She didn’t point public land pheasants but that was because they wouldn’t stand still.

Personally I don’t mind it and rather prefer it, it definitely made hunting over her quite enjoyable as she would wait for us to catch up giving us some easy shooting. Definitely better than the running roosters she would find at 20 yards and put up at 80 yards.

 

I'm surprised that the roosters are running rather than taking to wing. My boy would flush hard and either catch them, or they would take to wing. There is a brief pause when they wait for the bird to hunker down, then they pounce, but they are not pointing and don't wait to be told to flush. He was rock steady to wing and shot. He was an amazing upland hunter.

Im hunting in PA so our public land birds are released by the state rather than true wild pheasants out west so that may have something to do with it. Of the three roosters she found only one flushed immediately, the other two ran around then sprinted away and flushed out of range. Hens were much more likely to flush than run and as a result she flushed more of them in range.

 

I was training my boy for some pheasant hunting, he points to. But is to scared of guns, he has every hunting instinct. with field tests that is a fail for a non pointing breed such as goldens.
