Digging in the Garden
Cookie is a notorious gardener. I'm sure in a prior life, she was a landscaper. Anyway, I came home from work yesterday to see holes dug everywhere between the bushes where the snow melted, and mulch strewn all over the front walk. I was about to remind my wife to keep Cookie out of the bushes when she takes her out, when I saw my 8 year old son with dirty shoes and a gardening trowel. He was planting pumpkin seeds that he collected last halloween. :p: Cookie was innocently sleeping in the kitchen.

You know, I'm very lucky with Chance. I can honestly say that his only bad habit would be chewing things up inside the home. And then it's only paper products. That's it really.

Now Lucy, my little :bigangel:, (aka :satan:), has quite the list:

1. Barking

2. Jumping up on people

3. No Recall

4. Counter Surfing, (even at 8 lbs and 7" tall at the shoulder, she still manages to steal food)

5. Digging in the Garden

6. Excessive / inappropriate marking, (yes, she's a female and yes she marks :uhoh:)

7. Selective hearing

I already told my kids to lock me up if I ever even mention getting another Terrier. Never, never, never again!

But...I do love the little brat. :smooch:

Jumping up on people. Yes but he s getting better about not doing it to most people.

Resource Guarding No. He just might be missing a tooth or 2 if he messed with Cozy or her girls

No Recall. Minimal recall

Counter Surfing It has been 1 week since the last actual counter surf but he thought about it last night. He looked around the kitchen and saw me watching him.

Digging in the Garden Not a digger but will prune the brushes, trees, and grass

Chewing things up inside the home He has not chewed anything yet but he is still testing his boundaries. He will play keep away with garbage but will give it up once he is caught. He does not clench down- Very soft mouth

BarkingI say barking. He says communicating. He is a whined, talker, and barker. He as terrier attitude now about vocalizing. If they get away with it so does he. But all do know quiet. I guess he is now a "Gorkie" 1/2 Golden & 1/2 Yorkie

Aggression toward other dogs or people
He has yet to met someone or something he does not like but some don't like him. He can be very in your face. He likes to be in other dogs faces kissing before they have been properly introduced

Hogging to much of the bed He is not allowed on the furniture or in bed.

Pulling on the lead / leashHe is getting better especially with me but walks all over my brother and dad but they never work with him. So it is their own fault. He will walk very calmly next to my Zoey, yorkie's stroller.

Drinking from the toilet]I have no doubt if given the opportunity he would drink from the it. He tries to drink from the tub, shower, hose, and faucet

Waking you up to go out at unreasonable hours and then not going potty when let out He will potty if he gets me up. He had better do something. If you wake me up it is all business.

Chewing up underwear and other unmentionablesHe does not chew things but will pick it up to get your attention and run with it

Excessive / inappropriate marking
He does not mark. Since he was neutered he now pees like a lady. He used to raise is leg high and proud- Now he is whipped.

Selective hearingHe pretends to not hear you when he escapes

My guy is pretty darn good, I'd have to say I personally have more bad habits than he does but that's another thread...;)

I thought mine was the only problem child. He asks like a complete angel at training. He is a very sweet, love-bug which gets him out of a lot of trouble.

Gilmour - Jumping on people. Starting crap with Milo over a dog toy.

Milo - Fascinated with reflections on the ceiling. Barking. And his latest trick, he likes to purposely lose his bobo (aka HUCK Ball) in the blanket on the bed or couch so he can dig around trying to find it. It annoys the hell out of me :)

He has actually invented one-dog hide and seek.

Jumping up on people

Resource Guarding

No Recall - only when visitors arrive and he run up the driveway to greet them

Counter Surfing - we keep the counters clear of all foods, but he does lick the counters :yuck:

Digging in the Garden - gave up and periodically we fill the holes :banghead:

Chewing things up inside the home

Barking - Hank took up barking at the back fence last fall. We bought an outdoor bark control (looks like a birdhouse) that worked great. :dblthumb2

Aggression toward other dogs or people

Hogging to much of the bed

Pulling on the lead / leash - we use a non-pull harness :woot2:

Drinking from the toilet

Waking you up to go out at unreasonable hours and then not going potty when let out

Chewing up underwear and other unmentionables

Excessive / inappropriate marking

Selective hearing

I can say with all honesty that the only thing BaWaaJige does that is bad is counter surf. I have worked really hard on the not jumping on people ( he will jump on me when we head out to train I dont get after him for that tho). Other than that he is perfect. Just Golden!!! :D

Drinking out of the toilet, jumps on people, pulling on the leash (he is getting better though!)
he thinks he is my personal paper shredder...he wont eat paper but he will shred the crap out of any paper or cardboard he finds (including toilet paper...we learned our lesson there, lol)
He has selective hearing as well, but Im used to that being the mom of two boys :)

Finn is a saint except he does pull on the leash and takes up a huge portion of a king-sized bed! It would appear that he has now, after six years in our family, developed enough confidence to trash talk at me when I stop to chat on our walks. This is a dog who does not bark except maybe twice a year. For the past week, when out on trails, if I stop to chat with an acquaintance, he parks in a perfect sit in front of me and proceeds to tell me that "we are not out to visit with people, we are out to go read all the pee mail and how can I do that while we're just standing here and I'm not even getting any treats for my trouble in not patiently waiting and you should hurry your butt up and finish that conversation because I am getting impatient or don't you have eyes and can't see that!!!".....that's just the rough translation:)

Well, honestly the only thing my guys are guilty of is hogging the bed!!!!! Once in awhile the pulling on the leash can be a problem but not too often.

I'm a pretty lucky mommy!!!

No, pretty lucky with my golden boy Toby, no bad habits anymore. He is just a bit more spoiled now after his orthopedic surgeries, lol. My lab mix Thunder does dig once in a while, but not often, he is forgiven, an oldy but goody. My dachshund is a whole different story, digging, barking, hogs the bed even though he is so little. I get out of bed, come back and he is smack in the middle of my bed. He also likes to eat poop, any poop out there and he takes the stuffing out of Tobies favorite toys. He also pesters my lab mix Thunder a lot and loves pulling on his tail, not funny to Thunder, lol. Dachsi also pulls on the leash and he will take off if given the chance. So, he stays on the leash, sorry bud.

Mine are still young, so of course to be honest, they do the entire list! We are getting past/better at most, but not enough to exclude them from the list. Good thing is they are at the age where we are seeing all our hard work start to pay off and days are getting so much better.

Love to read that there is hope as they age.

Jumping up on people - she finally stopped this a few years ago. It was one of the hardest things to train out of her.

Pulling on the lead / leash - I have to say, to have an 11-year-old who still just CAN'T. GET TO. THE PARK. FAST. ENOUGH!!!! is kind of okay by me.

Jumping up on people - Not only is he overly excited when he meets people, but people encourage the jumping by acting as excited as he is to see him. I can't seem to beat it into their heads to NOT speak to him in a way that's going to get him super excited because he WILL jump on you. Do not speak to him until he calms down. It's hard enough to train him to not jump, I don't need people undoing what I've been trying to teach for MONTHS with no success.

Barking - He barks at pretty much EVERYTHING.

Hogging too much of the bed - I have to admit, this is pretty cute.

Digging in the Garden - He digs the entire yard. Makes my dad mad :D but he only does it during the winter. He doesn't dig in the summer. (knock on wood)

Counter surfing - Ehhh, he has put his paws on the counter to see what is up there, but has never tried to take anything and gets off as soon as you ask..so it's not really an issue..I hope it stays that way.

He doesn't pull on his leash, but he bites it and tries to play tug of war. OMG this makes me SO mad I don't know what to do. Nothing else he does makes me mad, but this...:doh: this drives me banana sandwich. I can't stand it.

Overall, he's a pretty good dog. Zero resource guarding, never had an issue with it. Never been aggressive towards another person. There IS one dog at my apartment at school that he absolutely HATES and I don't know why. He's fine with all other dogs but this specific one (I concur, I dislike this dog and his owner as well). He doesn't destroy everything in sight. Beautiful recall, which he just decided to start in the past month or so. People are pretty jealous that my dog actually comes and theirs doesn't ;) I guess I've been pretty lucky so far. I just wish I could get him to STOP JUMPING and STOP biting the leash. Then we would be okay.

My worst is when Max does jump up on people and I say "Off!" and they go "Oh no, no, don't worry, it's fine, my dogs jump on me!". Because I want my big dog to be badly behaved and think it's ok to jump on people? WTH? I end up having to say "Yes, I understand, but I am training him not to, so please don't encourage it". The general reaction from people is to ignore me, and carry on riling my dog up.

My trainer gave me some tips for how to deal with it, and they do seem to be working. We only greet him if he sits first, so he's started understand that being in a sit means attention and jumping doesn't. But yeah, it's not really us that I am worried about. It's other people :/

Jumping up on people - This used to be such a huge problem for us but recently he's become really good at greeting people without jumping. But, every now and then he'll get super-excited and up go the paws. Usually it's at the dog park, so people understand. I wish I knew how we managed to get him to stop - it was like a switch was flicked o_O.

Pulling on the lead / leash - Max is very big on pulling when we get out the car. He almost rips my arm off. He does a very good "sit, wait" and won't get out the car until I give the OK. But the second he's on the ground, he goes mental. He settles down after a while though.

Drinking from the toilet - Not yet, but he is VERY interested in the loud, water-producing machine next to the toilet paper dispenser.

Barking - He rarely barks unless we're taking too long getting ready for a walk. Then he gets very vocal. He also does this thing where he'll yawn and make an "arrrrrrrroooo" sound. Sometimes he adds a little grunt in there too. He does that before walks, when he's very excited and when I come home.

Waking you up to go out at unreasonable hours and then not going potty when let out - YES! He wakes me up at 1am, in a frenzy and I race outside with him... only to have him sit down and admire the view. And chase the cat. And drink some water. GAH! Drives me mad. But it's very cute.

Chewing up underwear and other unmentionables - Yep. Steals them from the laundry basket.

Excessive / inappropriate marking - I sometimes wonder if he realizes that he has no more pee left, halfway through his walk. I feel sorry for him - maybe I should give him more water ;)
Do any of you get led around by your GRs? Max likes to grab belt loops, pockets, belts - whatever he can - and pull us around with him at a fast trot. And he snorts loudly while he does it. He sort of reminds me of a horse :D
