I had this woman here today to give an estimate on an electric fence, and she said goldens need to run 9 miles per day! I found this to be a termendous amount of exercise, but not knowing the breed that well, I did not dare say anything. Thanks for any info!:uhoh:

gaius is a 10 month old boy puppy, but even he doesn't need nearly that much exercise. we do walk a lot and play a lot, but i think he'd prefer mental stimulation and just being busy (meeting people/dogs, training, going to new places, following me around when i do laundry and when i vacuum, general butting in everybody's business, etc.) over hard physical exercise.

lol, I think if I ever tried to take any of mine on a 9 mile walk, they would lay down and have a heart attack. I'm lucky though, mine are happy with going on a walk or not doing anything. We haven't done a darn thing today and all three are laying at my feet.

I regularly walk 3 mi (5 km) a day with my dog (365 days a year no matter what the weather is) and it is sufficient for him. However, 9 mi (14.4km) is doable for some golden retrievers but you may have to work up to that distance. I would walk 8-10 km a day without a problem, but if you asked me to run 8-10km a day, I would not be a happy camper unless I had 6-8 weeks of training to make it.

One of the members, monomer, would take his golden retriever Sidney on long bike rides with conditioning to work up the mileage. I don't know if he has been doing that lately or if he has introduced Sophie, his 2nd golden, to cycling yet.

I do not think they necessarily have to do the whole 9 miles at once.(although if built up to it I am sure they could) The walk is so very important, of course it is good excercise, it is so good to keep them moving, for the health of their hips also. It is also a stimulation for dogs, all the wonderful smells and new observations. Also it is a bonding time .
I walk mine 4 miles every day in the morning (all three)then we do a couple swims a week in the evening and every now and then throw in the treadmill.

Sounds like a good estimate for someone SELLING a perimeter fence. :p:

Sales talk - that's all it is. If a Golden needs 9 miles of running a day then NONE of our dogs is getting enough. Call her back up and ask her to provide proof via documentation and studies. I'm sure you'll get a Um... Hmmm... ugh! out of her.

BINGO! As for the amount of exercise.. I think it is according to your dog's needs. My Buckwheat at the bridge.. was the typical energizer bunny Golden. 9 miles and I bet he still would have been running.. at 12 people thought he was 5.. except for the white face... Rusty and Penny are laid back ( I requested this from the breeder ) and I am loving it. They will run, play, exercise, even get the zoomies.. then SLEEP... Gotta love it!

I think the furthest we've gone with the boys is like a 6-7 mile hike... and the next day neither one of them moved! So... 9 miles a day... no way for my guys!

And they do make doggie pedometers! Parker actually won one for graduating at the top of his one dog class. We never used it though. Maybe I'll try to find it so I can tell you if the thing actually works. You're supposed to attach it to the collar.

Actually... first place I looked I found it! It's made by "Play More".

Wow 9 miles? I walk Casey and Murphy daily for 2 miles plus a swim.
They are very happy with this. Sometimes Murphy well go on a run with me.. maybe
3 miles at the most. I jog roughly 35 miles a week with my long run on sundays.
I've never thought of taking them with me... 9 miles is a very long way for any
normal companion dog to run a day.
