I have a 7 month ppuppy. About a month ago he suddenly kept his head tilted to the right. He also seems to walk with his head low and he isnt as active as he was before. He still eats and plays but not like before.

I brought him to the vet and they didnt find any signs of an ear infection but they found some gunk in his right ear and when we would clean his right ear he would cry.

The vet also put him on baytril, prednisone and an anti-vertigo medicine. After 2 weeks he wouldnt cry anymore during his ear cleaning. However his head was still tilted so they did a MRI. They didnt find any tumors, etc but "well aerated mastoid cells with granulation". Supposedly this means there was an infection but it healed already.

Anyway im on my third going on fourth week of baytril and the prednisone was discontinued. But his head tilt is still there.

Any ideas what could be wrong? Or does it normally take a long time for the head tilt to stop?

Have you consulted a neurologist?

Having just gone through a neurological issue with Gabby, one of the side effects for one of the drugs they put her on were 'neurological' and they explained, things like eyes darting, head tilting, stumbling... So if head tilting can be neurological, I just wonder if one was consulted.

However a head tilt if not a problem can still be cute.

In almost 26 years as a vet, I don't think I have ever seen a pup with a head tilt. However, by definition, it could be vestibular disease caused by an inner ear infection. Most of us with older dogs see "old dog vestibular disease" or "idiopathic(don't now what causes it) vestibular disease. I know I have never seen it in a pup. I would definitely consult a neurologist.... however, sometimes they don't have all of the answers either....

Hi. I am actually in the Philippines, so I am not sure if they have neurologists for animals here. But I will ask.

I have a question though, if it was caused by an ear infection (the granulation tissue seen in the mri), how long does it normally take to clear up/head tilt to stop?

Thanks :)

This might be somewhat random, but maybe your dog has a pinched nerve or something like that? Have you thought of trying something like animal chiropractic? I have taken my dog, katie to the chiropractor several times as she is prone to neck issues after an injury she had earlier in life.

It might be worth a shot.

Best of luck to you and your pupper!
