Dogs and human language - amazed

Dogs are sooo funny about human language. My Fenris, god bless him, was smart, but dumb as a stump when it came to object names. I could show him a ball and a ring, clearly indicating which was which, but he seemed incapable of responding correctly to "fetch ring" or ball, it was like he guessed every time.

Bagheera may be smarter, or he's just been trained better. But last night he kinda blew me away. We were lying there in bed and I told him, "go get the the bag of chewies, by the kitchen" - which he's never picked up and hasn't even really had anything from the bag. He went and got the bag. How amazing is that? My other half-lab-half-golden, Lupo, was able to distinguish "go get HER shoes" the first time I asked him to get my then-future wife's shoes, the first time she ever came over to my house. He of course knew "go get my shoes" but I was amazed how well he understood the difference.

The ability to process commands is so selective. To Bagheera "drop it" is more a suggestion than a hard and fast rule to be instantly obeyed.

Does your dog speak your language (as opposed to commands)?

That's pretty cool.

Maya spends a lot more time with my wife than with me, on account of her working from home. She's "taught" Maya that the question "who is it?" means she stops what she's doing, jumps on the chair closest to the window, and looks out on the street for signs of humans or cars.
