First I want to say I do not have golden retrievers but instead was drawn here because some of the great (and recent) information I have read here about Pennys story and Bentleys stories with Parvo and although currently my male pup, Apollo, 7 months, has failed two parvo test, I am almost sure that is what it is. Unfortunately, his sister, Luna, also began showing signs this morning too. So since I have read the full forums here, and for days (Apollo got sick Wednesday night and was vetted Friday and Sat mornings for dehydration, and is on full meds) have researched and reviewed this virus thoroughly I do not want to ask repeated questions, and I do well know that many here are not experts, but I believe when loving their dogs, or just dogs in general, through an illness like this that some answers may come easily for them that may help save both of my pups lives! Both have had their shots and are more or less inside dogs, I believe they contracted parvo OR corona (won't know until the vet retest the fecal she got saturday morning) when we had them both altered last Friday.
This does concern me too that their systems are already compromised due to surgery, but fortunately, both had 'bounced back to their usual selves' before they fell ill.
So if anyone here can answer these questions in any capacity, I would be greatly appreciative!
1. Tamiflu - I have seen Tamiflu mentioned several times, then I seen a comment here about how it has shown effectiveness in early cases. I am wondering more here. If Luna is showing the signs this morning, I may be able to get it for her first thing, but would it still be beneficial to Apollo who is in day 4 now?
2. Age - In most instances I have seen people make reference to the Older the dog is, the better their chances, but on occasion I have seen things that said the older was worse. I know it affects older dogs less, so is the age any factor and if so which way?
3. Time - Although I know it likely definitely fluctuates, about how long did this last for any pups you have dealt with. And on age, does their age seem to make any difference in how long it last from first signs of illness until first signs of recovery?
4. Levels of illness - My own experience with parvo was 20 years ago and my doby basically laid near death unmoving and only taking fluids when forced on her. We made her live. Apollo seems to of course have no appetite, and I am have not forced him yet. (asking the doctor tomorrow about squirting some baby food chicken and rice cereal mix down his throat) but he has drank continuously. As a matter of fact he sits up quite often, looks at us (scared) in response to calling his name, or just baby talking to him, and when we dont bring him water often enough (At least today! YAY) he will drag himself off of the couch, head all the way down of course, but walk to the water dish. We do let him drink from it, but then only very minimally, and carry him back to bed. *then the bleaching and cleaning process begins again* So is this common too as a 'level' of parvo, or does it seem like Apollo has a not so horrific form of the virus?
5. My other dogs - Although we haven't officially been told its Parvo, we have done all we can do prevent the spreading. Although we have the two pups, both of whom I believe are now infected, we also have 2 adult dogs, one 6 and one we think is around 3 *rescue*. The 3 year old also had surgery last week to be altered so I am also worried about her immune system being compromised whether it is parvo (which I feel would be BETTER considering the lives of 2 more dogs are at stake and adults have a better chance) or coronavirus, which could mean I should expect to be nursing 4 dogs within the week.
We all thank you! Luna and Apollo the sick pups, and Eddie and Pandora the well dogs, for helping to answer any of these questions. And even though my dogs are all mixed and rescues I doubt many people who enjoyed dogs all of their lives don't know of at least one Golden who stole a place in their hearts, so to my favorite long gone golden, Koji, RIP.
