So we need some help. We have an 18 month old named Tucker. He's always been destructive - he can't have any stuffed toys, even the "indestructible" ones because he can split the seams in minutes. Usually when he's free in the house, we can stop him before he chews things, but we're trying to slowly increase his time alone as he gets better with chewing. The problem is that he will be fine for months being alone for an hour or two (while we're in the house, we never leave him out alone during the night or when we're gone), but then he'll randomly chew a hold in the carpet. On Saturday, he went to the dog park, was out all day, we had company, and the second we focused our attention to the TV, he chewed a chair.

The problem is that he does this even if he's had exercise and isn't necessarily bored. His targets are so random that it's impossible to spray the whole house with bitter apple. If we catch him in the act we are able to tell him no and leave it, but many times he has already done the damage and is just laying on the floor, so we can't really discipline him.

Have other people experienced this? We are pulling our hair out because he seems like he's doing so well for months and then bam, 12" hole in carpet. We have no idea what to do since it is so random.
