Hi everyone,

Marley has been a little strange for the last week, but since yesterday he's getting worse. Last week it started with him acting like he was bored, and sleeping alot, and maybe even a little sad. I thought it was just because of the move to Brazil and maybe the heat was making hm tired?

Yesterday he started not wanting to go out for walks during the day, he would not leave the apartment building, and then he stopped eating and drinking, but once my husband came home, he was happy and ate and drank lots.

Today, he will not go near his water bowl, he will only drink if I bring his bowl to him, he just wants to lay on my bed and is turning his head away if I bring his food bowl to him, he's sleeping alot and seems to be really mopey.

His poops are fine, the only change I can see in him is he's itching a little more than he used to, but not constantly and itching a little at his ear.

We have the vet tonight, but I wondered if anyone had any ideas of what it could be, or what I could do for him in the mean time.

Marley's Mommy:

So sorry to hear Marley is not himself.
How old is he?

My guess would be the move might have something to do with it-moving can be stressful for pets and humans.

Have his kidneys been checked recently? That might be a good idea.

I would try to hand feed him and put water on his tongue in meantime.

Itching: Could it be allergies or thyroid?

Hi Karen,

He is only 18 months old. I have never had his kindeys checked.

He took 2 pieces of kibble from my hand and that was it, he went back to bed, and a few drops of water.

I'm no expert and not a vet.

Could he be suffering from heat exhaustion. Was he out in the heat and sun a long time recently?

Lift up his jowls -are his gums pink or are they white?
If they are white he could be dehydrated or it could be more serious. I would get the vet appt moved up.

Karen - Yes he has been in the sun, but we try to keep him in the shaded areas as much as we can, or on the damp sand at the beach, we always give him water and let him get wet from the sea, so he doesn't over heat. His gums are pink.

Paula - when he was very young (6/7 weeks) he was very sick. Then he got sick again about 6 months ago. But he's not vomiting and his poops are ok.

Miss Happy - Yes he misses Scott alot. For some reason he seems to really favour him at the moment, like he didn't eat al yesterday until the evening when my husband came back and gave him food.

Today he doesn't even want a treat from me.

There are so many pretty goldens in Rio de Janeiro! Maybe you could arrange some play dates for Marley if it turns out he is fine physically. Did he need extra vaccines to go to Brazil?

I really do not have a clue. But just wanted to let you know I was thinking of him.

With him itching his ears maybe he developed allergies with the new location? Where did you move from?

If you just moved it really could be an adjustment period.

No he didn't need any extra vaccinations, we came from Argentina, so I don't know if that made a difference?

We are trying to get him a brother, as we think he would benefit from that. Although I am home with him all day, I think he'd like a play mate!

We moved here from Argentina, I know there are alot more bugs here than there were there. Also he loves to roll in the wet sand on the beach, so I wonder if perhaps thats what bothering him.

Curious, will he eat a regular sized meal when your hubby's home, or is still eating less but just happier when your hubby's home? I'd be more concerned that he's not drinking, so try to find ways to get fluids in him. Does he like to play with ice chips? Will he drink broth?

Keeping my fingers crossed for a simple answer and solution.

Paula,

Yeah he almost all his whole meal last night when Scott was here. I have put some water into a sports bottle as he loves to drink out of that when we're walking, so trying him with this right now, he seems to be taking some. Will gives him an ice cube too.

Thanks

Marley's mummy

Glad to hear his gums are pink!!

I also think missing your husband and the move itself is probably part of it.
The other thing I suspect is that he ate something outside, or was bitten by a bug. Have the vet check for bites.

When he was sick when young, what did they think Marley had?

The not drinking would concern me the most....
A dog his age can go several days without eating....

Can you convince him to eat ice chips, a popsicle, drink a small bit of chicken broth....?

Please let us know what vet says

Liberty

I told her to check his gums, they are pink, so I think that's a good sign, but I'm concerned about the not drinking too.
