my pup seems to get quite brownish in his ears, combination of dirt and wax i think..not alot but enough to want to give them a wipe. ive been cleaning them every few days just with a damp cloth, but someone has told me i should be using special dog ear wipes that you buy.

What does everyone else do?

Get a dog ear solution from your vet and ask your vet to show you how to clean ears properly. It's easier to see in person how to hold the dog, etc. Use cotton balls to wipe the visible part of the ear, and never, never, never use Q-tips and go into the canal with them.
