I thought this would be a fun topic, and it’s evergreen.

We went to a preserve. This is Okehocking Preserve in Newtown Square, PA.

Anyone else want to share?

We had a four hour agility seminar on crosses, and now Hallie is riding along in the car while I get errands done. This picture is from last weekend, but I’m pretty sure her concentrating face at agility looked just like this one of her looking at chicken.

Guess I need to think about what training goal is next as whipped cream has assumed the throne of high-value treats! (Yes, I know it should be given infrequently and in small quantities).
I bring a can of whip cream to agility class sometimes lol. I’m pretty sure it’s how I’ve gotten her to get better at not abandoning me at the end of the course to take extra obstacles.

I plan on doing a 10 minute run each today. Then 2 hours of running in the backyard. Its -2 degrees so i think they will only be outside for 10-15 minutes at a time. I need a place for then to swim. Anyone know a way to introduce a puppy to water in the winter?
I introduced my girl to the water last December at 4 months. I found a place that taught Dock diving with an indoor pool and they had puppy swim classes. Try searching for dock diving in your area. She was retrieving out of the water the first day, and I will 100% do the same with my next puppy.

Yesterday, Ramses was "working" with the maintenance guys of our apartment complex corridors as I was still not a 100% and they told me he could hang out with them. He generally stalks them from the balcony after our training drills as they work at a few apartments and drive these golf carts around. I don't think he fixed anything so I got to earn nothing from my golden 🤣
Time to earn some money Ramses! Then teach Hallie! 😂
I hope you are feeling 100% better soon!

Today Hallie helped me drop kids off at school in the morning as usual and then she hung out with me while I did my class work. We took a nice long walk at a nature trail and then in the evening we had our agility class. She did really well on the course, and most impressively to me she listened long distance to “leave it”- someone had left a little pile of paper towels on the turf. She got right back to the course. We worked on transitioning to me not having treats the whole time, since when we take the ACT we can’t have any. She didn’t seem to mind at all!

We went on a family walk with a friend and her two dogs. My daughter, Lulu, ended up with both the goldens next to her at the end of the walk. My friend’a boy (left) wanted to be near her most of the walk. Hallie did too once she settled and stopped doing an impression of a golden retriever shaped kite.

Today was our agility class! This weekend we are entering the Agility Course Test. I’m honestly unsure of how Hallie will do. Her runs in class either go well for where we’re at, or they’re total chaos.

Is agility training hard?
It's fun, but its challenging! I didn't realize how much went into really teaching your dog how to take obstacles safely and quickly and when to stop them- like you need to make sure your dog touches the ends of certain obstacles, and lots of them want to leap off just short of touching it. Building the distance your dog responds to your cues is factor for us, because Hallie is a lot faster than me. I love how it seems to deepen our communication to learn it together. Hallie seems to be taking to it pretty naturally though, and is very confident on all the obstacles. We're working through over-arousal on her first turn right now. She's just a little too excited to get started and gets off track when we first start. I also recently learned there is conditioning to help prevent sports injuries, so I'm researching that to see what I can implement to keep her healthy.

Saturday was a big day! We went to the ACT and it was good training. Hallie needs to keep working on distractions.
First run: The dog before her pooped in the ring and no one noticed because it was just dropping poop as it ran I guess? Hallie started out fine, then came across the first bit of it and sniffed it. She just got very off track and distracted, I ended up just calling her to me to leave the ring.
Second run: This one hurt, and I have it on video. She started out doing so great, she was just “on”, she was fast. Right as she comes out of the tunnel (21 seconds into her run), someone walked up to the ring ledge watching and set down their open ziploc of hot dogs. She only had two jumps left, and she passed them and ran straight to the hotdogs. Two instructors who were judging ended up hopping in with treats so she’d drop the plastic she was trying to swallow. I was mortified. My usual instructor who was there judging told everyone again not to put things, especially food, on the ledge of the ring.
Third run: I wasn’t originally signed up for this one, but I asked my instructor if she thought we should try one more since the second started out so well. She thought it was a good idea. I was wrong, lol. It was probably good to have her run once more and not be able to self reward for abandoning me, but she just wasn’t really “on” like she had been earlier. Hallie took extra jumps, hopped off the table at like three seconds but got her 1 q that round. And a third place ribbon. We also got tons of practice being in the crating room and I got to watch some other dogs run. I’m going to keep training and sign up again in a few months when the place I train at hosts one again.
Today I took her to the pet store for a bath, and someone thought it was a great idea to push their doodle right into her face to say hi while I was trying to towel her off. Hallie barked at him (the first time she’s barked at an approaching dog too) and the owner said she just thought her dog was handsome. I can not.

Today we did morning and evening walks and the weather was gorgeous. Pollen is way up though, and I think I’ll be making an appointment to see if we can add something more on for Hallie’s allergies. She’s trying to chew at her paws and shaking her head more even though I’ve been giving her current meds twice a day. Then, we practiced not acting like we’ve never trained in our life when people are at the house. I was talking to a solar panel rep for quite a while and kept putting Hallie back in a sit stay at my side. She needed practice not thinking she automatically gets to visit everyone 😅

We took a nice trail walk with a friend and her golden and Hallie did great while we ran sit stays with distractions and with greeting a new person who asked to pet the dogs. We’ve been playing a stay until releases find it game with a duck dummy, and up until today I didn’t ask her to bring it to me (super high value new toy, and I worked on getting her to hold her stay until releas d from across my big yard as I tossed or hid the duck, but I was hesitant to tell her to bring it back when I wasn’t sure I could ‘make’ her)Today I started having her bring it back, and she brought it every time. I know these are little wins compared to where a lot of people are at in training at this age, but she’s the first dog I’ve trained and she’s a lot of dog. I really think she takes after her hunt and field line dam. She’s always so focused and ready to run after something, very go-go-go and extremely athletic. She has so many ideas of what to do and definitely outsmarts me often.

Denver went on a nice 40 minute walk. I am now able to walk her without holding a leash she heels so well. Third day in a row, doing 40 minute walks without hanging onto the leash. Tucker had obedience class we worked on sit, offered focus, lie down, grabbing collar and teaching them its ok to walk with us while holding the collar, walking up and greeting people(he sat and gave me his attention the whole time like he was suppose to).
It sounds like Tucker is doing great in his puppy obedience classes! Great job to Denver too on the heeling.

I love reading this thread and seeing everyone's pictures! Hallie I did the same things today as I usually say- we went out to a walking trail. I also played training games with her in my and used the duck dummy. We worked on continuing to build impulse control and recalls, and she brought me a cheetos wrappers that floated over the fence from the neighbor kids. I saw her grab it and gave her the same "bring it!" command I use for a bumper or the duck dummy, and she ran straight over. I was disproportionately excited about this since the agility incident, lol.

Today I gave Hallie a bath and a quick groom, and completely messed up her ears. Luckily she has no opinions on haircuts. 🫠 We also had an extra agility class during the day and since my kids are on spring break, my daughter came and took some turns running her.

Today Denver and Tucker both got to run outside for about 2 hours. It was 45degrees at around 2 pm but it was 10 degrees this morning. Denver is driving me crazy, bad idea to bell train, she figured out if she wants her diaper off she rings the bell only another week of it being on hopefully. They both had a short 15 minute training session.
She’s a smart girl haha! Does she like to play outside in the summer as well?

I went on strike today - 40+ mph winds making it feel 20 degrees colder than it really is. We didn’t go anywhere except for our own backyard, and in quick bursts. I HATE the winter. Stick a fork in me today, I’m done. I don’t know how those of you in even colder climates do it. Hats off for keeping all of your marbles. March makes me just want to get in my car and start driving south.

^^ ETA: Turned on the national news and looks like storms are bad in New England. Hope everyone up there is hunkered down, and retains power. I guess I have quite little to complain about in contrast!
I hope you get gorgeous spring weather soon!

Today was our regular agility class! My husband was able to come watch for the first time and Hallie impressed him. My goal for next week is to remember to tape her first run and show you all how much energy and speed she starts out with. She was excellent about recalling to me tonight, but heavy on the extra obstacles on her way there. We walked one of our usual trails today and had a little bit of a weird encounter. A man with two goldens stopped to see Hallie and was remarking on how well behaved she was (because he didn’t see the beginning of her walk 😅) and said something about how she was around six months old… then proceeded to ask me how much she cost and say he sells golden retriever puppies for a significantly lower price and that he’s a breeder. 🫠 I need to keep a list of weird/rude/inappropriate questions people ask about my dog.
