Hi all,

Question for all of you, because some weird things have been happening to my golden retriever Henry... He's 3 years old and full of love and joy.

It started about a week ago, and does not happen every morning, but it has been happening maybe once every two days. In the morning, he wakes us up with either dry heaving or vomiting. If he does vomit, it's mostly bile. Usually, it has been happening right before feeding (30 minutes or so before), so I am guessing it's just his stomach getting excited about food.

However, last night, he woke us vomiting at 3:30 am, 5am and again at 8:30. We gave him Pepto Bismol at 5am to see if it would make a difference. We are now withholding food and I am working from home. The only thing I gave him was beef broth (specifically for dogs Honest Kitchen brand) to make sure he stayed hydrated and he is STARVING and a big ball of energy!

Now, I think he will be fine once I feed him (waiting to make sure the beef broth stays put) but I would love to figure out the cause of why this is happening pretty frequently.

Two notes - we have a doggy friend staying with us. Could it be stress due to him getting some of our love and affection?
- we have the air conditioning running all night because it is HOT outside. And I do sometimes get a dry throat and wake up coughing. Could that be doing something to make him dry heave and eventually vomit?

Any insights would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!
Deborah

He gets food twice a day, at around 8am and 7pm. It was worst this am but he seems to be fine since, gave him some soup and a bit of cooked turkey and so far so good.

Any ideas what might cause this? Will obviously take him to the vet if it continues but would like to avoid the cost, if possible.

Could be kennel cough if you are specifically having dry heaving in the morning or when he's excited.

However - if he's throwing up frequently - it could be a stomach bug. You can clear that up on your own if you do hamburger and rice. I also keep flagyl on hand for these occasions because it is a good emergency med.

I think the dry heaving was due to the vomiting as opposed to Kennel Cough because he has no other symptoms and is up to date on his shots, which actually happened a couple weeks ago.

Trying to figure out where the vomiting is coming from because it is literally in the morning, every 2 days and that's just weird! Usually it's mostly dry heaving because his stomach is empty but sometimes it's just bile.
