USA Ethical Breeder List

I have compiled a state-by-state list of ethical Golden Retriever breeders in the USA. This list consists of breeders who routinely follow the GRCA Code of Ethics and who have a history of participation in activities such as AKC events, preferably with titles. At this time, breeders lacking clear breed involvement have been excluded from this list, even if the required clearances are typically present.

While I have made every effort to ensure that breeders on this list meet the aforementioned criteria, it is imperative that you check clearances for the specific litter(s) of interest. It is the puppy buyer’s responsibility to verify all clearances and determine if the breeder and pairing is suitable for their needs. Health of a puppy cannot be guaranteed, even with a pedigree of full clearances. The presence of a breeder on this list does not guarantee that said breeder is a “good breeder” and does not imply endorsement by Golden Retriever Forum, its members, moderators, owners, or myself. Since this is not an exhaustive list, I have also included the information of the local GRCs so you may contact them for puppy referrals.

If you are looking for a puppy, here are some resources that provide an understanding of what to look for in a breeder and why we insist that breeders follow the above criteria.

The GRCA Code of Ethics advises the following health certifications for breeding:

• Hip clearance from OFA or PennHip at 24 months or older.
• Elbow clearance from OFA at 24 months or older.
• Heart clearance from a cardiologist (not practitioner) at 12 months or older.
• Eye clearance from an ophthalmologist within 12 months of breeding, and continuing annually for life.

Additionally, a genetic screening on at least one parent for common diseases such as NCL, prcd-PRA, PRA1, PRA2, DM, and Ichthyosis are advisable to prevent the production of affected puppies.
