Hello all, I am currently researching breeders and I'm getting tripped up understanding the OFA heart clearance. I know I want all four health clearances, Hip, Elbow (done after age 2), up to date eye and a heart clearance. But what's the difference between Echo, Specialist, practitioner and cardiologist? Which one do I want? I'm confused by it all...

Thank you, Jona.

My understanding is that you want a cardiologist (cardiology is a specialty). They will listen to the heart (auscultation) and if they feel it is necessary they will do an Echo-cardiogram. I have never had one done but my daughter is a Veterinary Cardiologist so a learned a little bit.

You want cardiologist, not specialist or practitioner- if the cardiologist does an echo it could be because he heard a murmur and wanted to verify it is not caused by disease that is genetic, or I am actually starting to see echo offered even at cardio clinics at dog shows so it could have been done from the start.
Good for you to be doing your homework!!
