What kind of Training Treats do you guys use?? i have 3 kinds i bought to see if he liked one better than the rest (which of course he likes all lol)... It seems like he just swallows them.. does that mean their too small? or is that normal? I have Bil.Jacs, Pet Botanics Training reward, and Natures Recipe training treats.

I found that boiling some chicken and using small pieces of that worked really well for Cannon...more than any other treat.

Knox is the same - he loves boiled chicken. I usually save it for when we are working on heel or recall, as it will call him off any scent or distraction (so far, anyway :crossfing ) Bil-Jac and the Natural Balance Roll (beef flavor) also work well for us. For teaching tricks we use an assortment: Wellness Puppy Bites, Nutro Crunchy Bites, Charlie Bears, Buddy Bisquits, Natural Balance Sweet Potato and Fish treats, kibble... Knox isn't picky. Although with the Charlie Bears he does seem to prefer the turkey liver and cranberry flavor. Shocker - because it's not like he "savors" them before swallowing!

Hot dogs, sliced into rounds - and the rounds into 1/4's - and either nuked or baked in a low oven till just this side of crisp. Bought bulk at Sam's club, I divide them into ziplock bags and freeze them. WAY less expensive than store bought, and the dogs love them. I do some in just rounds without 1/4'ng them to use in handling class, where I want a piece of bait that I can hold and allow the dog to "work" at when in a stack.
(At shows I use really "special" bait - either bourbon chicken or beef liver.)

PLAIN meat treats. No way am I giving them hotdogs, cheese, & treats with added ingredients - just PLAIN meat is what they're biologically designed to eat.

Freeze-dried duck hearts
Freeze-dried wild alaskan salmon
Freeze-dried turkey giblets (heart/liver/gizzard)
Dehydrated Turkey-Wild Venison Jerky
Dehydrated Wild Game Jerky (elk/venison/buffalo)

Maybe my dogs live so long because they are so well preserved ;)

Feeding raw or whole "holistic" foods is just fine, if that is what someone wants to do and it works for their dogs, but please don't suggest that those who choose not to are somehow being bad owners.

Years of feeding commercial kibble and treats and having healthy, long-lived dogs has worked for me, and countless others!

Treats

My vet told me to just use kibble, so I do and my pup is SUCH a chow hound that he does anything for plain kibble. The other people in puppy kindergarten had other more exotic treats, like hotdogs...:) so, Ranger really loved them!! But, I was still able to get him to respond to all the commands that the rest of the class did with plain ol' kibble. I guess it depends on the dog.
It sort of reminds me of my son, I only ever had skim milk at the house, so he thought all milk was watery. When he was about 11, we went out to the midwest and he had a glass of "real" milk at someone else's house. He was so impressed, "Mom, even the MILK tastes better out here!" That is when I had to tell him that we had that on the east coast too. Never was able to get that kid to drink skim milk again ;)

My trainer advises using soft treats as they chew them more quickly. I used string cheese and also use the dog food rolls of petfoodselect. I just cut it in little squares to use it as a training treat. I also use these buddies treats but I cant remember the full name. They are chicken and cheese flavor I believe and they are very soft and chewy. My dog has gone thru puppy kindergarten, beginner obedience and now he is on the last class of AKC Puppy Certification class. He takes his certification test next week and I am sure he will pass. In the summer I will probably get him int he advanced beginner obedience.

My preference are the plain freeze dried treats, but when I am playing with their Nina Ottosson wooden puzzles, I either use their food or the plain wild jerky that I carry; the smell is so strong & fresh. I love that stuff. :wavey:

I use pet botanicals Lamb and Rice. This is also what our trainer uses in class. I cut it up to small cubes. I am sure he loves it! I mean, I can't even remember the last time I had lamb! My pup is so lucky he gets to have it ever so often!
