So our 10 month old boy has been great so far and has trained pretty well. He is great with sit, down, stay, go to his bed, go to his crate, etc.... There are a few other commands/issues though that we are struggling with. Any advice on the following.

1) Off - If he is loose in the kitchen he will jump up on the counters to look for food, especially after we finishing eating. He isn't a jumper and won't jump on people but just can't help himself if he thinks there is food. We give him repeated "offs" and yank him down but to no avail?

2) Barking - He isn't a barker but in the last two weeks he has begun to bark when he is in his crate. We tend to crate him during our meals to prevent him from jumping on the table (see point 1) and lately he has been barking in is crate when we eat. We have been ignoring him but he keeps on barking. I guess we need to move the crate out of the kitchen or solve the jumping on the table thing.

Thanks for the feedback

For barking, there's a couple of different things you can try. Fill a squirt bottle with vinegar water and squirt him every time he barks. Or just try covering the crate so he can't see out.

Another option, that takes more effort, is this: put a blanket over his crate, but raise the front side so he can see out. If he's quiet, go over and give him a treat. As soon as he starts barking, cover him and ignore him. Once he's quiet again, lift the cover back up and treat him, and periodically treat him as long as he's quiet. Cover back up and ignore if barking starts again.

The vinegar spray in the mouth got the message to Storee that countersurfing wasn't such a hot idea. Also did the hot sauce on a cracker bait (left it where she could grab it)... yucky human food!

You may also want to keep him on leash when he's in the kitchen after a meal, or leave him in the crate till you've cleaned up and wiped down the counters (vinegar spray them after too, won't hurt anything).
