One trainers method, and pretty much the approach I took. A smaller puppy similar approach, but obviously not near as much of a correction or time. He has some videos where he's place training younger pups as well.

Thank you for the link but I don't use choke chains in training, so I'll try the other approaches.

Regardless, the important things to note in the video is the dog needs to have some kind of correction when it steps off the place, the timing of the correction needs to be right, and the praise needs to be the correct amount with out going overboard. His videos that show him place training pups have those elements, as well, though you won't see a choker used.

You can treat a dog to death while place training, but unless there are consequences for it stepping off the place, you will not keep it on place when it doesn't want to be there, but that has to be coupled with the right praise so it knows that place is a good and safe place to be.
