Seamus has a new vet.

We had blood drawn for titers for Parvo and Distemper.

The current vet wants to vaccinate him for Lyme, Lepto, Hepatitis, Parainfluenza as well as the Rabies, Bortetella and Canine Influenza (canine influenza required for boarding). Do we need all of these? Yes, I know we by law need the rabies but what about the others? I'm worried about giving him too many shots.

Any help would be appreciated!

My vet is an ID specialist (not because Piper needs one, it just happens to be what she does research in). In Massachusetts, pretty much all dogs get DHLPP (DHPP + lepto) (its prevalent here and can be fatal in dogs). Lyme is "optional" but recommended if you are planning on taking your dog outside in wooded areas. There's a lot of Lyme up here. According to her, and some articles she sent me, in addition to the traditional effects of Lyme disease, retrievers have a higher rate of lyme nephritis leading to renal failure than other dogs, so that may be another reason to consider Lyme.

But when Piper got the DHLPP, it was one shot because they all were combined and another for lyme. So she only got two shots. Perhaps they can combine them?

Thanks! I am hoping we don't need to combine them (if he needs them) since I've heard that the "COMBO" shots can cause more problems -- like if your dog has a reaction you don't know which one caused it. So, hopefully someone more knowledgeable than me can help.
