Sorry, one more batch of pix from the weekend:
This is one of our favorite places: Pilgrim is a natural hot springs ca 50 miles north of Nome, in the middle of the wilderness. It's an amazing place: One comes on a small dirt road through some very stark, barren Arctic mountain passes into this oasis of a valley: cottonwood forests, grass fields, flowers, and lush vegetation. The warm soil and no permafrost allow plants to grow here to sizes that you won't see for 100s of miles.
During the gold rush era around 1900, there were many more people here. Pilgrim was a catholic mission and orphanage. The old church and buildings are still there, in various stages of decay. The mission was closed in the 40ies and the place has been empty since then, but the catholic church still maintains it a bit. There are several luke-warm little pools and one very hot and steamy wooden tub. You can sit and soak in the wilderness and admire the nearby mountains. Bears come here, too, so you gotta watch for those.
The Pud and I bike the trails through the forest and meadows and then Mama sits in the tub and warms up and the Pud holds watch for bears
Pics:
1) the mountain pass above Pilgrim
2) 3) 4) 5) 6)
bike-joring with Pudden. Some of those fields were used as hay fields for mules during the mission time.
7) The Bendeleben mountains in the background
8) The Pud approves of the accomodations in front of the old orphanage dormitory
9) The old church and a plow
10) The Pud testing her sea legs
11) The hot tub!
12) The Pud says, "Ya want me to come in too, Mom?"
13) The Pud isn't so sure about this fella (well, he was dead, poor chap)
