Just got this interesting article from FetchDog. It is short and certainly not all-inclusive, but I found it interesting nonetheless. If you scroll down to the bottom and read the comments, you will see that the first commenter pointed out some obvious oversights, but it is a decent basic understanding. I wish I had known more about this when Bogey was in those vital early months.

Hi Mary - we are definitely training, but I now realize how many mistakes I made when he was at his "sponge stage." I think my dog has doggie ADD. :)

Great article. Our trainer always told us to pay attention to the dogs when they were just laying around or not to anything in particular. She said to reward them for just being good while we weren't looking. She also taught us the eye contact game. They game is more about having your dog look you in the eye when you say a key word like "ready". This way you know you have the dogs attention and he is ready to listen and follow direction. It was also a good game to keep the dogs from being bored and acting out in class. Anyway, my point is I guess I do have a good trainer. Good thing, cause we've been going to her for more than 15 years.
