About a month and a half ago I had to say goodbye to JC, my almost 15 year old sheltie. I got him and his brother Sam when they were just 7 weeks old. Sam (who turns 15 October 16) started acting a little lost and although he has always been a picky eater, he became even more so. I figured part of this was his way of grieving over the loss of his brother; however, recently he skipped a couple of days completely and turned his nose up at everything. I was just about to take him to the vet to have some bloodwork done, but wanted to try one more thing.

Based on advice I have read on here, I had DH pick up a couple of cans of tripe. I know lots of folks have mentioned the smell, but really, that bad? I opened my first can Sunday night--boy, this stuff smells REALLY, REALLY awful and I was sure Sam would turn his nose up at it. I mixed it with some kibble and he licked the bowl clean. This morning and tonight he did the same. Go figure! The open can has a plastic lid on it and is double bagged in ziplocs in the fridge (DH is scared to death the smell is going to permeate the whole fridge). So far, so good. After feeding, I spray some Lysol and immediately clean the bowl. I give Sam some peanut butter to help mask the smell on his breath.

So, to all of you who have posted about tripe--THANK YOU!!!! Sam even seemed a little more sprightly tonight!

Hmm - never tried the tripe but my old Jake never would walk away from homemade chicken soup mixed in his meal. (and it smells much better) :p:

Thanks everybody. Sam wouldn't eat this morning, but did just finish most of his dinner. He's always been a picky eater, but he's taking it to the extreme right now. As long as I can get him to eat once every day or two I'm happy. I have to go out of town for a week later in October and DH is not looking forward to the tripe!

Coppers-mom--thank you for your comment regarding JC. When I got on my computer tonight JC's picture popped up and it hit me that I would give anything to be able to hold him again. It's been right at 6 weeks since he left and it's amazing the little things that bring him back to me.
