Tennis balls

Hi, I am looking for recommendations on replacements for the usual tennis balls that my husband and I have been purchasing from Petco. Our girl Pali has taken to pulling the outside layer off, and I am worried about her ingesting it. Does anyone have recommendations on other types of play balls to use? Has anyone had luck with lacrosse balls?

I seem to recall that ordinary tennis balls aren't so good because not only can they eat the fuzz, but something about what it does to their teeth. Arthur doesn't even like the dog one that came with the Chuck-it launcher. He likes the Chuck-it whistler balls and one that bounces in a funny way—looks like a cross between a football and an ordinary ball. Both rubber. He also likes some squeaky cheapie soft plastic ones that came in a pack of four.

Tucker adores--is obsessed with might be more accurate--his Chuckit balls. We started him out playing with the orange ones, and he still really likes them : Chuckit! Ultra Fetch Balls - 2 Pack at REI.com

Then my daughter bought him a glow in the dark one, and he LOVES this ball! He loves the feel of it in his mouth, the way it bounces, the funny sound it makes...etc. Chuckit! Max Glow Rubber Ball at PETCO. If this ball is available, all other balls cease to exist! :D

The reason I love them, aside from how much fun Tucker has with them, is that so far he hasn't been able to damage them. I have heard of one dog that chewed one up, but my guy just chomps and chomps with no problem. He seems to love the textures of these balls.

I do get tennis balls for him to play with in the water, but I never let him chew on them anymore. He peels the cover off and eats it. :yuck:

I should buy stock in the ChuckIt company... :)

PS. Jordy is a doll!

Shelly loves her chuck-it rubber ball. She loves to chew on it, and has yet to destroy ione. It has been quite a while since she got it too.

Yesterday I gave my roommates dog a large, very strong tennis type ball (had the fuzz) and in a matter of minutes, he was trying to skin it...

I would really like to know what possesses a dog to want to skin these types of balls... lol.

At our first puppy class, the trainer went through a bunch of toys and gave the pros and cons. She said tennis balls were a danger because the fuzz can cause a bloackage, and the glue is toxic if ingested. Rocket's favorite fetch toy is a doughnut-shaped squeaky thing made out of tennis ball material. It's the one toy he will fetch consistently. So I still use it, but he is not allowed to use it like a chew toy, and only uses it under supervision for fetch.

For the poster who uses racquet balls...for what it's worth, our trainer said they are filled with some kind of powder that is toxic to dogs. I have no proof to back that statement...just passing it along for you to take or leave as you will. :)

For some reason, Rocket really could care less about balls. I think he finds them hard to keep in his mouth. Maybe when he gets a little bigger he'll like them more. For now, he'd rather chase his doughnut or sticks.

a HUGE thank you to everyone that offered their recommendations. I will be making a trip to a petstore on my lunch break to buy Pali new play balls. Thank you for the info on tennis balls damaging their teeth! I am glad I read that, I will take hers away from her. She seems to love her green tennis balls the most, so I will definitely try the glow in the dark ball :)

Tennis balls are HORRIBLE for their teeth. Kong makes non-abrasive tennis balls that won't file down their teeth. I didn't realize this until our friends showed us their 2 year old golden's teeth and they were all filed down to barely nothing. He eats the felt off of the tennis balls. The rubber balls are good or balls that they can't really chew up.
