Sophie's is acting strange.

On another thread I mentioned how she wasn't eating her breakfast, and was advised to give her 2 meals a day rather than 3 1 cup portions per day. I've been doing that, and meal time is still hit and miss with her. More than half the time, Duke gets into her bowl and tries to finish it.

The dynamics here are that the dogs are gated off in the kitchen, this is where I spend my time all day long, so they're not missing out on attention at all. I do this because Duke is a rascal, he finds whatever he can, and plays, chews, breaks it. I have a messy teen daughter who is hindering their freedom :( .

For the past 2 days, Sophie has been whinning and going toward the gate. Not just a bit of whinning, I mean non-stop whinning. I thought, oh maybe it's time to give them more freedom. This morning, she wouldn't come out of her crate, she just wanted to lay there, which I let her do. She didn't come out until hubster came downstairs and talked to her. Once again would not eat her breakfast. This time she wouldn't touch it at all. Instead, she went to the gate, whinned and cried and so I opened it to see what she wanted to do. For a while she enjoyed her freedom, played and explored a bit, then after that, the whinning started again. She's been laying on the couch, took a nap, while her brother explored and found makeshift toys (they played tug with daughter's bra at one point LOL!).

Sophie has be really quiet for the past couple of hours... she even threw up bile (signs that her tummy doesn't appreciate being empty). After checking her gums (good colour), her belly (soft and plyable), her vulva (not swollen or bleeding), her nipples (no swelling). I even thought maybe someone poisoned her. I'd suspect Duke would show signs if that's what happened because he's a chowhound and doesn't think before he ingests. I just don't know what can be wrong.

I'm almost thinking she's depressed... could that be? What are the signs of depression? At one point I thought could she be pregnant? There's no way Duke could have gotten her that way.. and we were extremely cautious when she was in heat. I thought false pregnancy? No swellings and she's not cuddling anything weirdly.

Gosh, I have no idea or advice, i just hope she feels better real soon. Please let us know how she is doing.
I'm thinking vet visit in order. The only time an animal of mine threw up bile was when she had an obstruction in her intestines. We almost lost her because I let it go too long.
Well she did eat about 1/2 of a cup at lunch hour, which I was quite relieved to see. She pooped a little poop, does have a touch of mucous in it.

I called the vet, and they told me that as long as she's still taking some food in, and drinking as well as going to the bathroom, it doesn't sound like she needs to see them right away. They told me to keep an eye on her to make sure she's still doing all those things over the weekend (long weekend here) and if things change, that I should bring her right in. Their worry is mostly weightloss at the moment. They said that it could be a number of things, the change in weather, or that she's just turned a year old... maybe she's just changing her eating habits. (I know that one isn't true because a change in eating habits would not have her get so hungry that she throws up bile... she would have eaten).

I've got my little book here, and I'll be on the lookout. I was so ready to head out to the vet's, I'm kind of disappointed I couldn't be fit in. I want to know that she won't suddenly get sick or something during the long weekend where I'd have to pay for Emergency rather than regular vet.

Right now she's again playing with Duke, so her energy is ok at the moment.... oh dear, I just looked! Shouldn't have! She's on the couch tearing appart a fast food tray. That makes me so happy LOL~! heheh.

Pretty sad when you get 59 views and only3 responses, one of which is mine. Guess when my golden isn't up to par, even if people don't have any suggestions, it would have been nice to have some well wishes for her.

Some people just mention an ailment that their golden has, serious or not, or just a happy situation and "everyone" (often including myself) is there to wish them well. How disappointing to find out that the Golden you love so much and means the world to you... a regular here, is of no importance to but a very few here.

I thank you Amy and Mom To Max for acknowledging my Sophie :)

I'm going to push enter, and will almost certainly feel embarrassed about my post, but you know what? Rather embarrassed than to deny that my feelings are pretty hurt.
I'm sorry your feelings are hurt. No harm meant. I actually have read the thread every time there has been a response to see what was said. I just had no idea what might be going on, so I didn't reply. I do hope everything is alright with her and I will continue to read this thread to see how things go.
Good wishes that Sophie feels well.

Maybe she needs to eat a little later in the morning. You could seperate Sophie and Duke and do some basic training excerises or even some more advanced tricks using her food as her rewards giving her a little one on one time. Take about 5 minutes a few times in the morning doing those tricks or basic training using portions of her morning meal. It will get some of her meal into her and the one on one interaction may help her if she is feeling a little down in the am.

Maybe Sophie just doesn't need to eat as much as she is given. As I believe someone else said when a dog changes their routine it may be a good idea to have her looked over by the vet.
It sounds similar to what we experienced with Morgan a few weeks ago. We have been battling food allergies and had her eating sweet potato and duck. Then one day she just stopped eating it, though she didn't whine. She also threw up in the morning because her stomach was empty and still would not eat. I ended up buying a small bag of venison based food and mixed it with the duck and she ate it. So we ended up mixing the food until the duck was gone and now she eats venison. All is good.

Maybe Sophis is just trying to tell you she wants a new flavor...
I hope it is not something worse then that.
I'm sorry you didn't get more responses. Yes, it is hurtful when others don't realize you need reassurance.

I hate that your vet wouldn't fit you in. Maybe you should lie a little next time.......

I hope she gets better and it isn't something to worry about, but I really don't know anything about this. If she threw up bile from being hungry, I think I would go back to the three meals a day until this resolves itself.

Hugs to you both!
Maybe a lot of people have been out and about today like me and didn't see this.

I hope a more knowledgeable member chimes in.

She sure does sound like she isn't feeling well. Except for the bra pulling and chewing up the fast food tray.
How's Sophie feeling this evening? I'm a little mystified that the vet didn't want to see her since she not only isn't eating but also acting lethargic and depressed.

I did see it and have been reading it, but I honestly have had less time on the computer today than I have even on a work day. We have been busy and running around all day long like coppers-mom. I have just checked in when I have had a break today. Please don't take it personally, because I know that's not why you haven't had a lot of responses.

Sorry my advice was so alarming but after a 1000 vet bill for a 30 dollar SPCA cat (worth every penny mind you) I worry whenever anyone mentions bile along with not eating. If she did swallow something maybe it will work it's way out and this will turn into another pulling underwear out your doggy's butt story. I hope she's back to herself soon!

About the hurt feelings, yes, I know that feeling. Been a bit off lately, but usually I try to take the time to respond to everyone's posts and it feels like a personal slight when they don't take the time to make a comment on yours. I don't think it's intended as such but I guess people need to remember to be more sensitive - if a pet is sick, quick post sorry to hear that, hope he/she gets well soon. Let us know how Sophie is tomorrow! And to others... I'm going to start a poll about this bile thing. Maybe I just don't have enough experience about that.
I honestly don't hang out here as much as I used to. I also didn't see your thread. I am sorry you are hurt and that Sophie isn't feeling well.

I have learned to go with my gut and take my dogs in to the vet when I am concerned. I'm actually surprised they didn't want to see her, do they only have one vet?

I guess if she is acting OK and you are checking her gums etc, there isn't much to do till Tuesday as long as she stays the same. You could do the chicken/rice thing since she had mucous in her poop. Her insides sound inflamed. if she throws up again, I'd take her in.

Gunner used to vomit bile in the morning early. I started giving him alittle food before bed and he was fine. This sounds different due to her not wanting to eat.
Yeah. Hotel4dogs recommended boiled skinless, boneless chicken breasts mixed with rice I believe when Copper had an upset stomach.

I didn't see the thread about Sophie not eating breakfast. Are you sure this is related? Not eating is one thing, throwing up bile and acting lethargic is a whole different ballgame.
maybe give her a nice treat raw steak, hamburger, real bone or another walk
maybe her mind will calm down

You know, I have felt the same way and I said to myself, 'fine, I can do that too'. So I haven't posted much on the threads like I used to as I found the same thing, lots of views and 3 maybe 4 replys. Now, that I know it is not just me, I will go back to posting, knowing I at least care about others' feelings, and if they don't post on my threads well, what are you going to do? I am sorry that I didn't post earlier when I read your thread the first time.
I usually post only if I feel I have valid advice and I must admit that is few and far between. I'll post good wishes more often.

So here goes - I really, really hope Sophie gets better. I also really think you should feed her more often if you are sure the bile is from lack of food (even if you have to give her boiled chicken and rice instead of dog food), but I don't know that's what the bile is from...
I think MomtoMax is posting a poll on the bile issue.

My two guys escaped the yard last year and spent 2.5 days lost on the mountain behind my house. Once I found them, I gave Copper some water and he threw up bile ALL over me. We went straight to the vet and he thought it was due to stress. Shrug.
I agree with the recommendation of chicken and rice or even a little lean ground beef and rice. Sometimes a day of that will calm their stomaches down and get them back on track. Whenever I did that for Ruby, it seemed to help and even picked up her spirits too.

Hope she starts perking up.
My Riley will throw up bile (is there a worse smell than dog bile?) if it has been too long between meals. We started giving her a couple of dog treats before bed and that took care of it.
While missing an occassional meal isn't cause for panic, loss of appetite and weight loss is a big concern. As is the change in activity level.

I'm glad you called your vet. I would probably take mine in, but that's based on my experience with intestinal blockages due to things that are not meant to be eaten and resulting emergency surgeries..
