Sleep deprived pup???

Hi, all, and THANKS for the tremendous support and info on this site.

I read that most 6 month old Goldens sleep 16-18 hours a day. Can a dog be sleep deprived? :) Our Joy sleeps about 8 hours at night and an hour or two in her crate each day when we go to the store or some other errand. She lies down in the kitchen a lot, but her eyes are always open, even if she's very "chilled out."

Should I put her in the crate more so that she sleeps? Sometimes she does seem sleepy.........

If you are home with her she will not go completely asleep but that is fine. She is just staying awake enough to know exactly where you are. My guys do the same thing when I am home on the weekend. I call it sleeping with one eye open.
That's EXACTLY what she does! She's very relaxed - it's not a nervous kind of attention. She just always seems to have an eye open. Thanks. I was wondering about this because she is quite energetic indoors on Sundays, which is the day she spends the most time (3 hours while we're at church) crated during the day. Every other day, she is a LUMP indoors. Of course, the moment we step outside, she's perky as a dewdrop in spring.
By that age, I think they are sleeping less. My Bama slept alot when he was a baby but started becoming a night owl like his Mom early on.
Shanks is now 9 months and is really terrible for sleeping when we are around.. He will collapse in a big heap in the front room and look like hes out cold but the moment one of us moves to get a drink or something hes right behind us... When he was really little he looked so tired and I had to leave him in his area and hide upstairs for him to sleep..
Sounds pretty typical to me, too. Penny will 'rest her eyes for a minute' (as my little grandson calls it :smooch:) during the day but she hardly ever really falls asleep.

But come 8:30 and she's out like a light until morning. Except for changing positions and sleep places, she pays no attention to us. She's been like that since a little pup.
then my Max must be sleep deprived as well!! that's all I have to say about that. 16 hours... some days.... if only.... :D
A tired puppy is a good puppy. Sounds like you are on the right track. You will find that there will be times when your pup have active periods. For Tucker, it is from 6 to 10 pm when everyone is home. On vacation, he is absolutely exhausted at the end of the day, when he is active all day, even if it is just walking around.

Shanks is exactly the same.. Hes not a morning dog at all (not a bad thing) he wakes up at 06:30 normally when our alram goes off he wants a toilet break a little food but mostly some love and attention on the bed then he goes back down stairs and will just laze around, or sleep if I leave him alone... Then hes wide awake for a nice walk and play in the park at lunch time then another little doze mid afternoon ready for the fun of the evening...
If I dont give hime the rest time and spend all day with him he will be out cold come 7 at night... Its such a hard life.. :)
