I was at a seminar last night given by this vet: http://www.welovepets.net/Staff/mercer.html and she recommends omega 3 at this doseage. Add EPA and DHA per dose (not ALL omega 3's) and dose at 300 mg (of DHA/EPA) per 10 pounds. For my crew that ranges from 1800 mg to 2200 mg per day. I find it easier to get that amount in a liquid. I usually just share my Carlson's finest fish oil or sometimes order them the pet Incelandic Pure. BTW, the Carlson's is very palatable and no fish burps. I've even used it to make a vinagrette ( it's lemon flavored)

Also, as a side note Dr Mercer brought to the seminar 2 of her wolfhounds (Mom and 6 mo old son) and one of her salukis. She has 5 wolfhounds and something like 14 salukis! It was SO fun and fascinating. She does lots of (animal) sports medicine and talked about physical therapy, massage, accupuncture, cold laser, etc. Also tailoring fitness programs for individual dogs, looking at breed and then the individual dog within that breed. She said keeping and maintaining strength and stability for a dog relies on core muscles, just as it does for a human. Also the simple walking of inclines or hills (coming downhill) is great for building shoulder strength. Makes sense but I hadn't thought of it before.

All this was brought to mind while reading Copper's thread about how well he's doing. YEA.

Mr. copper is why I looked at this thread - just in case there is something else I need to be giving him. I am afraid to try fish oil with him due to the pancreatitis even though quite a few people have recommended it.

He will go back to his internal specialist next month and I will ask her if she thinks he could have fish oil as a supplement without any risks. I know Hotel4dogs gives her older guy sardines every day and it has really helped him (except for fishy breath I'll bet).

Copper sure got some "incline" workout Wednesday. He left me in the dirt.:):p:;)

I'm going to go to the website and see what I can learn. thanks!

the website is just a bio on the vet who gave the seminar. I found her very interesting and enjoyed her sight hounds immensely.

Thanks Betty. I really wanted to make this seminar but Barkley took priority. I wish I could have been there, given Toby's athleticism and need for exercise. I had no idea Dr. Mercer is back at East Lake. Hooray! She will be perfect for Toby to see if he has any more incidents of rhabdomyolisis. We could have used her two years ago and then this October when Toby had episodes after too much activity.

She saw Toby the week after we adopted him as a young puppy. We gave him his first bath and he wiggled a little too much and got shampoo in his one good eye. Being new "parents" to him we were a little concerned we blinded him! She was on duty and did a great job at allieviating our concerns. Toby was fine and now sees better than all of us out of that eye.

Did Dr. Mercer mention if she practices acupuncture on her patients? We love Barkley's acupuncture vet, but that is a 35 mile round trip. As Toby enters his senior years we were thinking of starting him on general wellness acupunture.

Anne, I believe she does but am not 100% certain. Yes, seems like she would be a wonderful resource for Mr Activity. I believe she said she's only working Thurs as she lives out in the country. She did say she's longingly looking for space for an underwater treadmill..... wouldn't that be great???? BTW, I got you a handout, although it's just pretty much an outline of her presentation.

I very much enjoyed her and it was fun to see her with her dogs.

Sounds so interesting. I give my boys 1500 a day but they also eat salmon food so hope that gets them in the category.
Thanks Betty!
