Hi,

Can anyone recommend a reputable Golden Retriever breeder in the VA/NC/MD/DC areas? We are willing to travel, but would prefer to drive rather than fly to pick up our puppy. We are willing to spend up to $3000, but have found some going for as much as $7000. Of course, we want a healthy dog and lineage and do not want to support unethical breeding, but are hoping both can be accomplished for $3000 and within a reasonable driving distance.

Thank you!

Welcome! $3,000 is about the starting price of an ethically bred golden puppy on the east coast. Here is a recent thread where I have listed breeders in several different posts to get you started:

Thank you! I noticed in your prior posts, you hadn't verified the VA options yet. Have you been able to do so since then? And any in NC? Thank you!

The Virginia ones I mentioned should all be fine. I haven’t had the time to go through and throughly vet all of their dogs and breedings, but when you find a litter, just post the registered names of the sire and dam and we will evaluate.

Whatever you do, stay FAR away from Promise Land Goldens in MD. I'm embarrassed to admit we engaged with them. This was before we came across this site and we were naively fooled by the information on the website that appears impressive to a novice. In a weird twist of fate described in the post linked below, our engagement with them fell through and we only lost a deposit. Ultimately, we were relieved that we did not fully fund a puppy from an unethical breeding operation, but wished we had done more careful research and found some of the good people on this site like @Oceanside before engaging at all.

Thank you everyone! Does anyone have information about Legacy Farm Goldens in Virginia? Thinking about a litter with Artemis (on their website) and Cash (Pedigree: PBGS Show Me The Money SH, WCX)
Both parents have inadequate cardiac clearances (done by a practitioner instead of a cardiologist) and out of date eyes. Both of those clearances have to be sent in by the breeder so it doesn't hurt to ask if they have a cardiologist clearance and up to date eyes, but if not, then they are not compliant with the GRCA Code of Ethics.

Did a little looking around their site.. not real impressed. She said they do conformation but did not see any pics or CH dogs on the site. Then found that she has puppy buyers pick their puppy based on deposit.. this is taken off her site.. Don't agree with that procedure

  • At 5 weeks of age, when the puppies are being weaned, I invite you to schedule a visit to meet all my dogs and see the puppies. Choosing your puppy will be at 8 weeks, and will be in the order of deposits.
