My husband and I are looking for a reputable breeder for a golden retriever. We live in PA and are looking for any recommendations. We came across Ridley Red Retrievers, as we are interested in a deep red color, however, we read some negative reviews about Ridley Red Retrievers, describing them as being a puppy mill and being overpriced. Any advice/recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Can’t say I’ve heard of them. They were not on any lists of recommended breeders in PA I received last year. Everyone on the lists I received follow the Golden Retriever Club of America code of ethics.

Feel free to reach out to these clubs for referrals- depending where you are in PA any would make sense:
Lenape Golden Retriever Club
Greater Pittsburgh Golden Retriever Club
Chesapeake Golden Retriever Club
Potomac Golden Retriever Club
Cuyahoga Valley Golden Retriever Club

Nothing good going on @ RRR. https://www.goldenretrieverforum.com/golden-retrievers-main-discussion/442129-ridleys-red-retrivers-pa.html is a link from last time we discussed , this morning I went to OFA to look see had the Ferarri dog ever gotten those claimed done and pending clearances -no= OFA still doesn't have them. That, or dog failed both hips and elbows and they didn't initial the box to release fails.

I can't believe I'm going to say this- but even for the doodles they are fails. The poodles on OFA they own are not registered animals so its not nicely pedigreed poodles they're mixing w Goldens.

I live in the area these people say they are from. I honestly have never heard of them. There are only two breeders in this “area” I would ever consider a puppy from and one is WOM/active in confirmation/respected and the other referred by a GRCA club/active in confirmation.

Huge word of caution for this area: you will encounter “home hobby” folks selling puppies for $1500 saying they’re raised in a home environment. They don’t have clearances. I was told by one they were going to use $$ from the litter to do clearances. It wasn’t the dogs first litter- so what was the point? You’d already bred 2 liters and were on your third. It was basically trying to shut me up.

Also, my massage therapist knows several people working to shut down puppy mills here and said the dog wardens have found so many cases where they’re now placing dogs in “family homes” to breed them. Therefore, they’re skirting the mill. But they’re not doing clearances, they’re breeding excessively. And they could have 15 dogs in 15 different homes. Still a mill operation.

Thank you so much! We are learning so much! Since you're from the "area" could you give any specific recommendation for some breeders? Thanks again!

Your best bet would be to reach out to Lenape, Greater Pittsburgh or Chesapeake clubs for breeder referral. They’re going to have the most accurate puppy referral breeders. You can also search on here too; however, the clubs sometimes know who is planning litters/litters on ground. It’s also highly likely any puppies are already spoken for (if any have puppies due/on the ground) so you may have to wait a few months. Or you could get lucky. But IMo, Core clearances are a must on Goldens. So many things like Pigmentary Uveitis, now NCL, hip/elbow dysplasia...it’s worth waiting.

I have reached out to the GR clubs listed here as well as in NJ, CT, MA, and NY, with no success. This may have been a good resource at one time, but not now. Perhaps it is the Coronavirus. I hear that it has prompted a spike in interest while the circumstances are difficult. I have had Goldens for 30 years, and lost my last dog a few months ago. I am ready to give up and take my chances on a breeder not meeting the GRCA standards.

All I can tell you is that we, as reputable breeders, wish we could help you. I skipped doing final hips and elbows in 2 females at our club's February clinic which has turned out to be a bad decision, puppy wise. Could I have gone ahead of bred them on their prelims? Of course. But then I wouldn't have been any better than the people that we are trying to steer you away from.

Those are some precious kids you have!
Start your own thread- this one is on PA, and also, much as that is a darling video, don't fall for a pup whose parents don't have the minimal 4 core clearances.. AND don't let the kids visit a litter, either, til you have made sure it's the keeper litter..

Ugh! I'm in the same situation. Lost our last golden to cancer 18 months ago. Was planning on finding a new pup this spring and then COVID and no pups available from anyone reputable. I've tried all of the same GRC's as you have...

I think there’s several things that are playing into no availability...

Demand.

Not breeding during Covid-19.

Some bitches just turned 2 and may not have finished a CH and breeder waits until then.

Some bitches went into season prior to right before 2 years and so no puppies for 6-12 months depending on a heat cycle.

I can say when I first started looking in May 2018 I never heard back from Lenape until after I’d already brought a puppy home in early September 2018.

Cuyahoga/Greater Pittsburgh/Potomac/Chesapeake were the clubs I heard from almost immediately.

I know my breeder and some of the other breeders in one club area are prepping for hunt tests currently. So it’s my understanding these positions are volunteer, so I think you may hear from them once those tests are completed Depending which one you contact.

Also, this might be something else...if a breeder in PA has a job outaide of breeding (most do) they may just be getting back into the swing of their jobs in Pennsylvania if their business was shut down/unemployed, so email lag time might be longer.
