Can anybody give any advice on this thread on how to pick a good personality? I want a Golden that loves me lots and is obedient (don't we all?!) I'm choosing a 6 week old pup soon. Also does gender count for anything? : Thanks

Sweetie is definatly better with other dogs & is the most obedient of my two. They both love everybody but that wasn't always the case Sweetie used to be afraid of people & Jack could be a bit intimidating but at about 2 he got over that. I think the amount of time you put in is whats important. The love is a Goldens way of life & you won't have any problems with that no matter what gender.Welcome to the forum & we look forward to seeing lots of pics. To be perfectly honest, I would want the breeder to choose for me. In general, a good breeder will spend many, many hours observing those puppies and (since hopefully she is keeping one for herself) will be making careful notes on the different personality traits and things she notices. Most breeders don't make that decision until close to the 7th/8th week, so I'm surprised they're letting you pick your own puppy at 6 weeks.

Whatever pup you bring home, they are all individuals and the time and effort you put into training and developing the relationship with him or her for the first year or two of life together will develop that bond. You really do get out what you put in. Find an obedience class to sign up for with your new baby and take her everywhere with you that you can, running errands, out to public places etc. THe more time she spends out with you the more fun she will tend to be. Most, goldens are loving by nature. They have a very low threshold about who is a friend and just about everyone fits into that bracket. That is what makes them such good service dogs. They can transfer their affection to just about anyone. I took my 12 year old boy into a store with me today and he pulled me up to a sales person he had never met before and acted like it was his long lost best friend.

As far as obedient - well that is what you put into the dog but their trainability is something to look for.

Tell the breeder what you are looking for and let them pick out the pup that best suits you.
