Hi all,

My Brother in Law told me that their Border Collie was running around the pool all excited and fell in. He couldn't find the steps and panicked. They jumped in and rescued him, but I hate to think what might've happened!!

I do not know for sure if he is in the pool that much, but wanted to ask for any and all advice for them. I also have seen that some of you have platforms or doggy stairs that make it easier for them to get out? I did a quick search and all I could find was Pool Pup, Dog Pool Stairs and a Ramp, which didn't wow me, but then I'm no expert. I'm not sure how much they can afford, but then again, I'm sure they want to ensure the safety of their dog!

Thanks so much!
They live in Australia.

This makes me CRAZY!!!! If their dog could fall in, so could a child. Even if they don't have children, there are always neighbor kids who would be fascinated by the water and pools. It's heartbreaking how many children drown every year even in our town in pools. ALL pools should be fenced and have an alarm IMO.

Living in Florida and owning dogs and a pool I believe the best thing to do is teach your dog how to get in and out. It is one of the first things we did with our first golden, our weimaraner and then with Riley. By 9 weeks she was able to get in and out of the pool using the steps. If she falls in she knows where the steps are located. We are also in the process of teaching her that she may go in on command only.

Oh don't even get me started!!!!!!!! All pools should be fenced with 4 sided fencing, gates , locks and alarms!!!!!! For the protection of every innocent --dogs,children, adults ...it is not rocket science!!!!!!!!

sadly missing my 14 month old grandbaby who did drown due to negligence and stupidity!!!!!!!!!!!

You did the right thing by posting.

Yes the pool should have a fence around in but in our house if you use the patio door in our kitchen, they you are out on the deck and the pool is attached to the deck.

So-ooo, our dogs are NEVER on that deck unless we are. Of course, living in Illinois we can only use the pool a few months a year, but still, we never leave our dogs out there alone, where that could happen.
Your friends have to think about their dog as they would a 2 year old child.

The first thing the vet told me when we moved here and she heard that the house had a swimming pool was to get a platform for Axel because sooo many pets drown tragically due to lack of safety measures.
I searched the web looking everywhere, the US, Germany, etc., but luckily for me I found the perfect platform right here in Brazil. All the platforms I researched abroad were either very expensive or did not have good reviews. I bought this one because it was the only one I could find in this domestic market, and I did that without high expectations, but it turned out to be a fantastic buy in quality and safety and it's also fun for Axel as you can tell from the pictures (sometimes he justs sits there enjoying the coolness of the water).
What is great about Axel is that he learned that he cannot jump into the pool no matter what when the metal fence (in the pictures) is placed around the stepsrail and he is very good following this rule. Of course the second we remove the fence he is in the water in an instant.
The brand name is Save Dog at www.savedog.com.br and they have customer videos in YouTube under savedog 3 or savedog 4 if anybody is interested in watching.
Because I know how important the safety of our "babies" is for all of us, and if you are interested and not able to communicate due to language barriers, please feel free to ask and I will be happy to help. Aside from being a customer, I have absolutely no links to this firm.
