Can dogs get poison ivy or poison oak?

I know there's poison ivy at my FH's cottage, but he says that none of his family's dogs have ever seemed to be affected... so just wondering if I should take precautions with Mia when we go.

i don't think dogs can get poison ivy, but i think you can get it from a dog if they have the oil on their fur. i've know a few people who think that's how they got a bad case of poison ivy. better safe than sorry.

Nopers, dogs are immune to urushiol oil that is contained in any of the poison plants(ivy, oak, summac) but as mainegirl stated they can spread to those people who do get it pretty easily.

I am a living example of someone who got a HORRIBLE case of poison ivy from snuggling with a golden who traipsed through it. What a miserable experience it is. Make them get rid of it! Old fashioned Palm Olive can cut some of the oils on human skin if you wash it in the first half hour, or so said my wilderness medicine course. Between poison ivy and ticks, I'll take winter any day. . .
