Last night Penny was at the barn with me and DD's Aussie mix came out. It was their first meeting since Penny's surgery. I was pleased to see how Sascha acted...like she had really missed her best friend. Normally Sascha is all about The Ball but she was sniffing Penny and generally acting like OMG, I'm so glad to see you.
Penny is shy about dogs but is comfortable around Sascha and perfectly content to let S have the ball, chase the ball, etc. She does come right to me if I pet S so there has to be equal petting.
Penny made 2 play bows. Sascha came nose-to-nose; they both froze with Pen turning her nose a bit to the side but keeping an eye on S. Then S kind of barked/snapped and dd and I both said "Hey hey, play nice". The both went on about their business; followed us to the pasture while we put hay out, etc. seemingly to not pay much attention to each other which is how they usually are. We chalked it up to S being over excited. She plays the same way with DD if she gets too wound up. S is the biggest cuddle bug I've ever seen. We don't think she was well socialized and doesn't seem to know how to play with dogs. Just with people.
Question: Is that momentary bit of 'tension' part of an intense play pattern? They never make physical contact. Sascha runs after the ball, Penny watches and sometimes runs around with S but never runs after the ball. It's sort of like they play AT each other.
I was just wondering if I should be worried or not.
