Pet Insurance

Hi all...I had a quick question regarding pet insurance. Mostly like, should I, shouldn't I, what company is recommended, what are we looking at as far as costs? That fun stuff...

My hubby and I are considering purchasing a Golden in the upcoming months and my mother said something that made me pause. She claims the next time she ever buys a puppy she will purchase pet insurance. She has a 7 year old black lab who now needs ACL surgery and has been diagnosed with a thyroid problem. I never really thought about it until she mentioned it and quite frankly we never carried it on our previous pets (we were lucky to have two dalmatians who never needed it). But now that we are hoping to add a Golden to our lives I'm thinking it might be prudent. If we are going to spend good money to purchase the healthiest puppy possible, shouldn't we ensure we can give it the best care possible if necessary?

Just looking for some opinions...
Thanks!
Dawn

We had a Maltese dog before and spent a lot of money on different issues. So now this time with Bailey we decided on taking an insurance and we selected PetPlan. We pay $25 a month for a 200$ deductible and 100% paid after that. It gives me some peace of mind in case Bailey gets really sick.
It depends. Can you afford to self insure? I didn't have insurance on my golden who recently passed away but I am considering insurance on my new lab. Not sure why as I can afford to pay for most surgeries and treatments, but it might make decision making a little easier later in his life. In other words if he is 10-12 years old and needs an expensive treatment, having insurance eliminates one factor to weigh when trying to decide if it's really worth it at that age. The only decision I will have to make is whether the treatment will in fact give him good quality of life at that point.

I second this- I have the same plan policy/price. Petplan has been nothing short of wonderful. I've had to file a few claims and have never had any issues.
Thanks for the info Swiss....

I've been pondering it now since my 7 year old "Lab" sister needs a $6,000 ACL sugery. I'm thinking that $25/month with a $200 deductible would be a whole lot easier to deal with financially then that hefty bill all in one shot. As I said, I got extremely lucky with my Dals (good thing too, being in college I didn't have the extra $), but I'm not sure I would want to risk that again. Now that I'm out of college and can afford the extra few $ a month, I think that might be a better route.
I have PetPlan on my Goldens, so far so good.
I would recommend you to get a pet insurance for your doggie because the cost could be overwhelming at times. My Pochi is with Trupanion Pet Insurance and it provide us with all the good things. First, 90% of the bill is reimbursed, and there is no claim limits/year. Some pet insurance companies limit the claim to $2000/year. You can find more about it on the Trupanion website. Let me know if you need more reasons for why I chose to get Trupanion Pet Insurance!
