Peanut allergy?

491 Views 29 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  GoldenRetieverL0ver08
Every time Tucker eats a little bit of peanut butter or this morning he smelt it. He throws up and its chunky and nasty. The peanut butter doesnt have added sugars, xylitol or anything that would harm them(Denver can eat it without a issue). Anyone every expierence this?

A peanut allergy would result in a rash, hives or itchiness.

What you say is happening is not an allergy.

If it was my dog I would determine what else he has eaten before. Additionally, it is odd to have a dod throw up just from smelling something so again figure out what he ate before. Your dog might be having eating indiscretions in your yard.

He only eats his food in the morning at around 6:30 -7:00. Then he goes outside(and doesnt eat anything i make sure of it as i hate when they eat stuff). Then around 8-9 oclock is when the peanut butter is pulled out to make breakfast for us. He immediately throws up looking, smelling, and once he tasted it.

An upset stomach is not an allergy but it might just upset his stomach when he eats it. But a reaction due to only smelling is probably a coincidence with something else going on.

By the way no matter how closely you watch a dog outside he/she can eat something....it happens when their nose is close to the ground smelling.....I'm sure there is bunny poop in your yard etc

Your solution is simple. Don't give your dog peanut butter.

I dont give them peanut butter anymore. There is definitely not bunny poop(no bunnies around here). My ducks and chickens are kept enclosed. And we have cameras up that catch if any animal comes in our yard. I have him on a leash to. And treat him after he goes potty still. So he is watching me for the treat.
I can't think of a reason to give a dog peanut butter.
Knowing it would be regurgitated on the floor seems like a reason not to.

I get that he is reacting to the smell of your peanut butter. Here’s a possible reason (since it’s true for humans, it might be true for dogs): when you get sick right after eating something, even if it’s not what made you sick, the smell of that food is enough to make you nauseous forever after. It’s a survival mechanism. one-trial learning to protect you from possible poisons. His reaction of vomiting is a click bigger than human nausea in the same situation, because dogs have more of a vomit reflex than we do. Just a guess.

I make treats with peanut butter for training as they are low calorie and healthier.

I know ive done that. Maybe we have a vet appointment anyway next week. Its his second checkup of the year.

Peanut butter is not low calorie, and if you are using a commercial one, it has added sugar and salt. And... it makes your dog sick. That alone would be enough for me. It makes your dog sick - stop giving it to him. It doesn't matter if it's an allergy or not (it's not). There are tons of other healthier options out there for training.

Healthier than what? They are making your dog vomit.

Ive fed them to him since we brought him home. This recently started happening.

I use dog food for most of my training now. As i cant go to the store every week and buy 15 bags of dog treats

I'm not sure if you are exaggerating, but if you're not, that many treats could also be helping to make your dog sick. That's a LOT of treats in a week.

Using kibble is fine for puppy training - just measure it out from his meals so that he is not getting overfed. No need for peanut butter or anything else. If you do want to use treats, you could try dried chicken - but use it in combination with kibble. Or something like Zuke's Minis, if you need something soft. Some people use Cheerios, too. But in moderation. Too much of anything has the potential to cause stomach upset.

FWIW you can buy bulk bags of treats, too-- at the training club, people really like to purchase the buckets of freeze dried liver to use. High value and bulk. A bucket typically lasts two or three weeks, particularly if you're not acting as room service during training and are actually waiting for the correct behaviors.

Anybody want to guess how many treats I use in a month of training with two retrievers?

I'm sure zero, however, some sports you can't utilize P+/R- and the average dog owner should not utilize an e-collar ;)
