Hi there,
My apologies if this post is misplaced; I've done some searching on the forum, but couldn't find any specific & current recommendation threads. We've been contacting many of the recommendations we have found on here so far, but are finding that some are dated or will not be breeding.

My family & I are in search for a golden retriever for end of June-early June (but might even be able to bump this timeline up for mid-June.) We have used the AKC Marketplace website & have contacted over 85 different breeders in NY/NJ/CT/NH/VT/MA. We currently live in Central NY.

We were wondering if any of these breeders are recommended? We are looking for a family pet, with the possibility of training to be a therapy dog. We have begun to look into various clearances, but are just generally looking for something that is healthy, with a good temperament & don't feel too strongly about having a show or breeding quality dog. We are pretty apprehensive about putting down deposits at the moment without further information on the breeders at the top of our list, but also don't want to risk waiting until a litter is born next month.

Our list so far is:

Goldscheins Homestead
Super Goldens
Griffin's Goldens
Upstate Goldens

Nevani Goldens
Goldensand

Chestnut Goldens
Buck Family Farm
Adirondac Golden Retrievers *We are leery because of recent posts about possible cancerous genes
Aly's Goldens

Are there any others that we should look into? Thank you in advance!

Welcome to GRF! One thing to keep in mind is that AKC Marketplace unfortunately isn’t full of ethical breeders. Of the breeders on your list, I’d only consider Goldensand and Chestnut. Nevani would possibly be acceptable.

I complied a list of breeders in every state (link below). NY doesn’t have a lot of good breeders but the Northeast in general has a ton. You’ve certainly reached out to a lot of breeders already, but a look through this list as well as the educational information in the second post of the thread.

When you find a breeder you’re interested in, get the registered names of the parents of the litter and post them here so we can help you assess.

We were looking for a puppy, and weren’t getting any good leads. I’d ask anyone I saw with one-where’d you get it? Most people would say New York or something vague, which made me think maybe they didn’t understand or didn’t research a lot. Or whatever.

Anyway, I started telling everyone I knew that I was looking. That paid off when my hairdresser (my daughter in law!) said she had a client who breeds. Within a few days, it just so happened that the breeder had to pass on her six month old pup’s show/breeding aspirations due to a minor flaw. He’s mine now, he’s an absolute angel, and I’m still so amazed at the way we came together.
I’d been expecting to get a little baby pup, but getting an older, well-trained puppy has been wonderful for us. You might have a few more possibilities if you’re willing to buy an older puppy, and let the breeders know that.

This list is one I maintain of breeders in New England. Looking For Breeder Advice [New England]

There will be some overlap between my list and Matt’s. Mine is longer because my only real criteria was that the breeder appeared to be following the GRCA Code of Ethics. Always do your due diligence in verifying clearances (We can help you if, as Matt said, you can give us the registered names of the parent dogs).

That could be a possibility! To be honest, we're pretty excited about getting a puppy-puppy & are looking forward to the training process (famous last words, I'm sure, haha) but are open to options because we do have such a slim window for picking up a puppy. I'm glad you had a positive experience though & I will certainly reach out to those around me to see who might have some leads!

I’m actually happy to have skipped over the potty training, etc. puppy months! He doesn’t chew things, doesn’t take items from tables or chairs, was crate trained, all the hassle sort of stuff that I’d just be slogging through.

I was initially looking for a young pup mostly to avoid any sort of not-great experiences that “rehomed” older dogs may come with. I hadn’t thought about breeders who intend to keep a great pup, but then it doesn’t work out for their program.
I hope you find your new dog soon!

Adirondac has excellent dogs, and I wouldn't let the recent cancer post sway you one way or the other. That said, these are field dogs usually sold to working homes. Depending on your level of experience and intentions, this may or may not be a good fit for you. I would be more concerned about that.

Hi there —I live in upstate NY and would strongly advise you AVOID Super Goldens, Upstate Goldens, Hilltop Goldens, Goldschein’s Goldens, Buck Family Farm. They are not reputable — breeding underaged, no clearances, no health testing and borderline commercial puppy production/puppy mills.

Some recommendations in this area:

Crangold
Goldensand
Butternut Hill
Kernow
Sunkissed
FoxRun
Overlook
Kinderval
Pebwin
Chestnut
Starrdust
Kelore
Darrowby
Hearthstone

That's extremely helpful, thank you! I contacted FoxRun yesterday, Goldensand is a possibility with our timing, but unfortunately Darrowby & Kernow only have English Creme Goldens, & I've made a couple attempts to contact Kinderval, Pebwin, & Sunkissed with no luck (not responding to emails & no numbers listed.)

Darrowby & Kernow only have English Creme Goldens,
They have very nice, quality European style goldens. They DO NOT advertise them as English cream. Just making this general distinction because there are many very reputable breeders that have goldens (in this case) from really great imported lines.

There is a massive difference between breeders like them and so called “English crème” breeders.

Thank you for the explanation! I had only heard to stay away from the English cream breeds, so I appreciate the information :)

You’re welcome! To be clear the warning to stay away from “English cream” breeders refers to anyone who markets their dogs as english cream — as that is a BYB term. The color itself is completely acceptable. It’s when you have breeders who are breeding solely for color and marketing them as special or rare to stay away from.

I included those reputable European style breeders because I figured if you didn’t have a color preference you might be interested 😊

I've been following Goldscheins Homestead on FB. As well as reading some reviews on this site and elsewhere. They're a few minutes from our Catskills home. My impression: they seem like a Golden Retriever puppy mill. Constantly churning out litters. I was quoted $2900 for a pup. And, they provide nothing for that amount of money. No medical history/info that other breeders offer. The pups do not seem to be home raised. More like livestock. They also run a petting zoo. Again, this is just my opinion.

They are a puppy mill. They view animals as livestock and use them for income.
