Hey everyone. Wanted to introduce myself. My name is Courtney. I'm from Massachusetts and currently a student studying Veterinary Medicine.

I own 2 Shih Tzu's and a hedgehog.

I actually signed up for this forum because I'm very interested in the near future to own a Golden. I'm just trying to research and learn as much as I can about the breed. I would really appreciate everyone's help if they could give me as much information as possible as far as good breeder's in the Massachusetts or Rhode Island area. I read that it's a good idea to make sure the dog's parents have a clearance of elbow, hip, eye, and heart check as well.

I recently not too long ago got really burnt out by a Shih Tzu breeder in my area that took me and my husband's deposit money and did some really not so nice things to us after visiting the pup since he was 3 days old. 2 days before the pup was suppose to come home she tried to hit me with a C-Section vet bill and claimed we were responsible to pay it (this was never agreed upon in our previous meetings nor is it on her policy and contracts) Needless to say the breeder took our deposit and sold the dog to someone else. She also claims that we never gave her a 100 dollar deposit (though I have proof on the contract we did) So I'm really trying to avoid this heartache all over again and find a caring reputable person to buy our next dog from in the future.

Thank you all :crossfing

Hi Courtney I hope you like it here. This is a great forum filled with lots of info on this wonderful breed. One of the first things we would need to know is what do you plan on doing with the dog? Are you interested in conformation, hunting, therapy work or just a house pet? For clearance you should check and see if they have done thyroid also. I am not familiar with breeders out your way but you can always check with Golden Retriever Association.

Hi Courtney,

Welcome to the forum.

I'm so sorry for the bad experience you had with the breeder

There are several members here on the forum that are Breeders, members are also happy to give referrals or help you with one you are interested.

Best of luck with your Vet school studies.

Glad you've joined us, enjoy the forum.

Here is a link to the Golden Retriever Club of America-there is a lot of very useful information and they also have a Puppy Referral where you can search by State or Region.

Thank you so much <3

I'm just looking for a house pet. Are Goldens normally ok with small dogs? I have a male and female Shih Tzu. My male is turning 2 in October and my female will be 3 in January. I was looking to get a male Golden.

Welcome Courtney and your Shih Tzu pack.

I will speak from my personal experience and say that my buddy is very careful around smaller dogs as long as they mind their manners. He will play but will not tolerate being bitten or snapped at in an aggressive way. We have many friends who visit and love to let their Yorkie's and Poodle dogs play with my Golden TuffDog.

Golden's are excellent house pets! :)

Thank you Alan :) My Shih Tzu's can be a bit bouncing off the walls at times running around after each other and horsing around sometimes a bit rough, but for the most part they are very lazy..lol. Never bitten or snapped at. I ended up going to Salem Mass today and met 2 really friendly Goldens that a woman was walking. She stopped and let me pet them and answered a lot of questions for me..really nice of her. I can't wait to get one <3
