Hi~

New to the forum. We got our first Golden in June, Cooper, he's now about 22 weeks old. Couple random questions. Why does he get the "zoomies"? Runs full speed around the couches and bounces off them, crazy crazy boy. My husband & I haven't owned a dog together and are almost married a year so we're learning a lot. HA!

Also he's been doing a strange thing when he goes poo. He'll squat and go and then walk around in the squated position like he still has to go for a while. Sometimes he goes more, other times not. And he doesn't do this every time. We have been switching his food over the last 3 weeks and are almost done mixing (once I see his poo get solid again).

Any thoughts?

Montana does that squatting/walking around crouching butt thing when his anal sacs need to be cleared out. If they don't have solid poop it doesn't secreat them on their own. I cleaned them out once and NEVER NEVER NEVER again!!! YUKKKKYYYY. I let the vet do it.

I love the zoomies. Enjoy them. As Cooper gets older, they will not come as often or last as long.:(

Our Penny squats and then has maybe 1 small 'squat off' tidbit. She almost always does 1 big pile and then a little bit about 1 foot away.

If Cooper's poos aren't solid, then you have a different problem. Have you done a fecal on him to check for parasites? May I ask the reason for switching his food?

Welcome to the forum! And, congratulations on your very first golden. I can almost guarantee he will not be your last. Your life will never be the same - in a very very good way.

We would love to see some pictures of Cooper if you haven't already posted them. I'll go see.

Zoomies are the best. They're so fun. For Duke, he still gets them and continues on if we make a big deal of them. wishihad2goldens, Duke does the same thing as Penny. I know he's never completely done until after the second squat.

Glad to see you here, afauth. We're certainly a diverse group, and love our goldens!!!

Max had the zooms out in the field last night and bounced off of me several times, I was laughing so hard I think they could hear me in town (about 5 miles away).

He does the "squeeze out the last bit" thing with the poopin too.

The zoomies are fun! We sit (or dodge out of the way) and laugh our butts off. I'm still trying to figure out how to use this forum so I will try getting some picks on here. I think he's REALLY big for his age (5 months, 50lbs). ??

THOR0918....we didn't get the puppy as a "test" neccessarily for having kids but it is proving to be that way a little, like I said, we are learning a lot. :p: We both grew up with dogs and a Golden was the one breed we both agreed on and liked.

WishIhad2goldens....we changed his food to a better brand. He was on Iams and after doing some research and starting puppy classes we learned that some of these mass market brands don't have great stuff in them. plus, they have corn, etc and goldens are prone to allergies. Also, I was going nuts with the shedding but since we've switched it is SOOOOO much better, we no longer have hair floating around and all over our hands when we pet him. So his poo is solid after he gets used to the higher amount of new food then when I add more it goes soft again. We have to go to the vet for a heartworm test (standard protocol i guess) and when I call to make the appt, I will see about taking in a sample just to be sure.

Think his anal sacs would need to be cleaned already? Like I said, we're new! hahaha.

It could be because he has loose stool? I am not an expert so do not take my word for it because we are new at this at well. We got Lucky 5 weeks ago (he is 9 months old...adopted). Anyways, we have had to change his food now for the second time! The first time we changed his food it was from the lowest grade food I know of (Gravy Train) and we switched to Canidae. Well after a lot of thought and talking to the vet and Lucky's trainer we switched from Canidae to California Natural (actually starting the switch today as the first day). The reason we switched is his stool never hardened (his stool was normal we did a test with the vet) and they think the Barley in Canidae caused issues.

Long story short he does the continued squat thing as well. Actually sometimes he will keep the squat and rub his rear end on the grass (almost looks like he is wiping). I have only noticed when we are switching him foods. Soooo my guess is that once your pup is adjusted to the new food he will stop that.

Hope this helps.

Cute boy!

My young one gets the zoomies too. I have a small house, with 4 dogs who are not small and two other humans who also are not small. But, my ridgeback, who is tall for her breed (we call her our pony) - she gets the zoomies with him. To watch "the pony" and Coda zoom down the hall for 15 min back and forth, one jumping over and past the other - is one of the brightest moments of my days! They love each other so much (ridgeback thinks she is the puppy's mom, the real mom sits back and watches the antics with the look that they are so stupid...) -- they have the best time zooming.

Wouldn't trade watching those zoomies for anything!

Cherish every zoom!

Good luck with your new puppy!

Welcome!

I miss the zoomies! It is too funny! Butters and Koda are almost 3 and rarely get them anymore.

Koda does the pooping thing, too... we call it the helicopter poo because he keeps spinning around until he drops 5-6 little poos and then he is done... He gets his glands cleaned and has hard stools so that may not necessarily be the issue (although it very well could be). Maybe it's just a preference... I think that is what Koda's is.

Which food have you switched him too now?

He is really really cute, by the way!

We switched him to Blue Buffalo and he loves it. Gobbles it up like we never feed him. The serving suggestion says 3 1/2 c-4 1/2 c but I feed him 3 cups a day plus he gets treats or a stuffed Kong and sometime some food in a plastic bottle, he loves to throw that around and get the food out. So he's getting enough, he's just a piggy. My thought is that once he gets used to it the issue will go away but just to be safe I'll take a sample in when we go for his next check-up......that way I can rest assured it will pass.

The zoomies always makes me smile. I would add some canned pumpkin (not pumpkin pie mix) to his diet to help firm his stools up. That will help his anal sacks empty each time he poops.
