Hello, my golden Romeo is 10 years old. He's my heart and soul along with his brother.... in a nut shell, Romeo began having seizures in late October and has had a pattern of about one every 3 weeks or so. Of course this traumatized the entire family seeing him go through this. He gets stiff(2times he was sleeping at onset), convulsions, aggressive paddling, loss of bladder, foaming at mouth, guteral moans...just heart breaking. This lasts at most 2min. Then an hour of pacing, ataxia real bad, hunger, thirst, disoriented...then a lot of sleep, then back to himself. The emergency vet wanted me to give him keppra, but being a nurse seeing what the side effects of my human patients, I just couldn't. When I took him to his normal vet he said he would use KBr only to control seizures, that he has had a lot of success controlling and even in some cases stopping the seizures all together. My problem is I want to and have began using CBD canna pet, but he has had one seizure since being on the CBD for only 3weeks. Is there anyone with experience medicating their fur babies with KBr only? Please help!! I'm sooo Leary because he already has ataxia and I don't want to make things worse. Thank you anyone that can input!!!
All tests came back normal including chest X-ray and ultrasound (upon taking him in for his first seizure vet found a testicular tumor which he is going to be neutered...no metastasis signs). But vet wants him on KBr 3weeks before we do surgery so he can get a semi therapeutic level. We are directed to use a loading dose at first. But how safe is this med....I'm scared.

if you have had bad experiences with Meshugga Kennels please contact me 631-707-3544. I am working with Dante DiPirro in trying to find people who have had similar experiences with Ann Wasserman!

I am so sorry. I wish I could help you. Seizures are so heart breaking, as you said. Our Sophie began having them when she was 12. She also would go stiff, throw her head back, work her mouth, move her feet, drool, and lose control of bowels and bladder. My vet was on vacation and had a fill in vet when Sophie had her 2ed and 3rd seizures within a week or so, and this vet put her n phenobarbital and that was horrible, even tho I was told that it would get better over time. She had had hips and knees and with that drug she would just fall over when trying to walk. When my vet came back, he took her off it. We live in a small town of 4000 but our vet is so top rate he has folks coming out from the city.

I did learn about putting an ice pack on the spine about waste level to keep temps down as they go so high during seizures and can cause brain damage. I did that for the 3rd seizure--staying behind her-- as I had just learned about, and it didn't seem to last as long and she recovered faster. You might want to research doing this. We lost her to hemangiosarcoma Oct. 12--she would have been 13 two days ago.

KBr, seizures, golden, help

Thank you for bumping my post/thread. I'm so sorry for your loss:crying: I'm wondering if the KBr is as safe and effective as I was told.

I have not had to treat seizures very much, thankfully, but in vet school we often used KBr in conjunction with phenobarbital. By using them together you can use lower doses of each than you would if either was used alone, which, in theory, minimizes side effects.
If you are concerned, you could always seek a second opinion with a veterinary neurologist.

I'm sorry I didn't see this sooner. My Helo has been on KBr for 5 years and he has no side effects at all. It's been a life saver for him and stopped his seizures totally for a couple of years. Then he had a reaction to some fish flavored dog food and had a few more seizures but has been seizure free for over 3 years now. He is still on KBr. He gets 3 ml of the liquid kind every evening. I hope this helps.

Thank you so much! I prayed..a lot, then started him on this med last week on a loading dose schedule for 5 days. His ataxia is much worse, but a small price to pay if it stops his seizures. He will go in to be neutered for the testicular tumor, but we needed to get him on a med to control the seizures first. I'm hoping the symptoms ware off a bit over time, but for now it's KBr and CBD for my baby. Thanks so much for sharing,
Love, Cristy

I am thinking once he's off the loading dose, the side effects will decrease and hopefully go away all together. Keep us informed!!! Good luck to you!

I most definitely will. That's my hope, that the side effects will lessen. Really, it's just the unsteadiness and weakness in limbs that bothers him. He was always on the smaller side, so..a bit of weight would do him good with the increased hunger, thirst ..etc. if we make it through this week, we will have passed a marker for his seizure pattern..yaaay! I really appreciate your support and outreach. Love Cristy and Romeo?

Just a little update, we have been on KBr for a month now, and we passed our first marker! His pattern of seizures was about one every 3weeks....we've not had a seizure since starting Medes. I pray this works...he does have slight symptoms such as the ataxia(really bad), increased hunger, thirst, and sleepy; but we will take that over a seizure any day,!?. He still needs surgery to remove testicular tumor(praying it's a non cancerous tumor), and recovery will be hard, please pray that when the time comes(vet wanted to stabilize seizures before surgery) that all goes smooth and we have a speedy recovery???????

I'm sorry to be slow responding; I haven't been here much lately as our lives have been very full. I'm sad that you and your boy are having to deal with seizures and glad that the KBr is working for him.

If you haven't read the Seizures 101 sticky thread, it is full of information about dealing with seizures, provided by a lot of members who have coped with the condition.

Don't hesitate to ask questions. The GRF members are very helpful with conditions like seizures and someone is certain to have experienced any issue you might come across.

Hugs and prayers,
Lucy

Hi! My Peaches started having seizures when she was 17 months. All were while she slept. For 3 months they were sporadic and not close in time until then she had 2 within 6 hours. Prior to that we started on different Chinese herbs and changed her diet too. At the time she had 2 my vet said we had to start her on phenylbarbitol. She was on a lower dose and also takes Pycgenol which lessens the spaciness side effect that goes with the drug. She also is on all the same Chinese herbs. Sept 2016 was a year seizure free and we started reducing her phenylbarbitol. She only takes 1/4 of a 60mg pill 1x a day now. I'm sorry I didn't see this sooner. Any questions or if I can help let me know. Hugs to you and your baby!
