Hi all,

I stumbled on your site recently while doing some research for a new puppy. Lots of information here to process. I am currently without a golden. I had to put my best friend (Jesse) down 3 years ago at the age of 13. She was my first dog and I swore she would be my last but I have a 6 year old son and 5 year old daughter that want a dog (me too). So now i'm trying to find a good breeder in the Baltimore, MD area. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks
Scott

Although I don't have a puppy from them, if I lived in Maryland I would be getting a puppy from Delmarva in a heartbeat! They breed beautiful dogs with an excellent reputation. Visit them here: http://www.delmarvagoldens.com

Their dogs have all of their clearances, and from what little I know I believe they are producing pups with excellent temperaments and good health. I hope someone else who knows them better will chime in. Just my opinion, but I don't think you can go wrong with them.

I looked at their site, they have an available litter in January. My wife told me she would shoot me if I spent $1,400 on a pup.

I used to feel that way too until I started doing my research and spent well over $5,000 on medical bills in the first year of my pup's life because I went with a back yard breeder who refused to accept any responsibility or help me with my sick boy.

Now that I understand more about clearances and health and how plagued this wonderful breed is with problems I wouldn't hesitate to spend more on the front end. Not sure if that argument will win your wife over, but as you do more research you will see that over the years goldens have acquired many serious health problems, and good breeders try their best to breed these problems out of the lines or not have them at all. The reason the pups cost more than you might think they would is because of the money spent on getting the parents' clearances (hips, elbows, eyes, heart) and the excellent care that they are given as puppies so that by the time they join your family they are well-socialized, fluffy, healthy babies.

Just my two cents! :)

Welcome. If Delmarva has a litter available, you should seriously consider giving them a call. They are known on the Forum and are well thought of.

I'm also in Maryland and purchased Ike from another Md Breeder which I have now come to realize was not the reputable Breeder I thought they were...and I paid more than the $1400 that a wonderful Delmarva pup costs. Tell your wife that spending a little more now can save you thousands of dollars in Vet bills down the road.

Welcome to the forum,

$1400 is not bad for a dog with their proper clearances. Delmarva has some gorgeous dogs and a good quality breeder. Someone told me you can pay up front for a good dog or pay later with a less expensive breeder that doesnt do clearances.

Welcome from Georgia, Scott:wavey:
I can not be of any help with breeders however I was in your situation for several years, after our Poodle Dog friend of 13 years left us. My wife and I swore we would never have another doggy......enter Mr Tuff Dog... Golden Retriever extraordinaire:) ...He was 2 years old when he came to us and stole our hearts.

I wish you great success in your quest to find just the right dog for you and your family!

I live on the eastern shore and have also heard wonderful things about delmarva goldens. We were going to get our golden from them but ended up finding a breeder with an earlier litter. Good luck with finding your pup! :0)
