I wanted to know if neutering really increases a dog's chances of having health problems like cancer and hip dysplasia and that vasectomy is a real option I should consider to pro-long my dog's life. I cannot remember whether I've heard or read it so cannot post source. I hope some vets and professionals can weigh in.

I just discussed this with my vet about a female dog. We discussed just removing her uterus and leaving her ovaries to allow for normal endocrine activity for her life. It does mean the dog believes they are fertile and will try to breed when given the opportunity during her "heat" cycle. My vet stated that he is seeing more and more of these kinds of requests instead of the old fashioned spay or neuter. He did not have a set opinion as the trend is quickly changing.
