Preface: I've always had my dog's nails trimmed at the groomer because I'm scared to do it myself!! So today I took 10 month old Scout to get a much needed nail trim. This was only her third trim; her first was done by her vet when she was very little, and the next at Pet Smart which I didn't witness but was told that she struggled quite a bit. Today I took her to a groomer in a small studio and she hated it. The groomer, her assistant and myself had to hold her as she flailed about, and one back nail did get nicked and bled for awhile. So how do I get her to accept nail trims? She's the first dog I've had to object so strenuously. Should I give her something to calm her beforehand? She is normally a Very Good Girl.

Susan Garrrett has several videos on how to train a dog to accept nail trims. Just search on “Susan Garrett dogs that nail trimming” and they should come up.
In the meantime, Goggle “dog scratch board” for a way to teach him to file his own nails (I think there’s a thread on this on the forum too). All three of my dogs use a scratch board to do their own front nails. Castor is so excited about doing it that he can barely hold a stay until I get the board in position! You’ll still need to do the dew claws and back nails some other way, but it might buy you some time to do the training. I agree that using a dremel is a better option than a clipper, with a much lower risk of nicking the dog.
