Looking for Reputable VA Breeder

5179 Views 16 Replies 10 Participants Last post by  MercyMom
Greetings all! This is my first post, and I'm hoping someone can let me know of reputable breeders preferably near Richmond, Va. I would also consider Maryland or North Carolina.

Thanks so much!

Here are some breeders in Maryland that are good. Delmarva has some beautiful dogs.

Great - thanks for the quick response! I clicked the link to the thread and saw all that everyone had nothing but positive things to say. Also looked up their website and was very happy to see that their dogs are raised as family members...
Is anyone familiar with Eldorado Goldens in Richmond, VA?

Yes. Chris Browning has been involved with Goldens for many years. Has dogs of her breeding in many show and perfromance homes as well as loving pet families.

Here are some links to some Golden Retriever Clubs' bredder referral pages in your area of the country.

Gunpowder River GRC

Good luck in your search! :wavey:

Ash,
I just saw your PM - thank you!! I don't have enough posts yet to reply directly but just wanted to know how much I appreciate the info!
Thanks so much for the info on Eldorado Goldens and the other links! She lives very close to me. I understand that her dogs are kennel dogs vs house dogs.... does that matter?

If you are asking it probably matters to you and that is what is important. I do not know what the setup is there but I would ask/see for myself and then judge. Many breeders have a number of dogs that makes it impossible to keep all in their home all the time. Many keep their senior dogs in their home all the time and then rotate the others so they all get some time in the home. Again I do not know Eldorado's set up, this is just a generalization on my part. Hope this helps.
Yes, it does matter to me... I understand your point that it would be impossible for breeders who have many to keep them all in the house. I'm going to take your advice and go check it out for myself. Thanks again!

You welcome! Best of luck.
I'm in NC...

And I'm keeping an eye out for a good breeder in NC or VA area- though it'll likely be a year before I get serious about it.

I'd bookmarked a thread on NC breeders: http://www.goldenretrieverforum.com/showpost.php?p=818368&postcount=14

The thread's a little dated- but I went to an AKC event this summer and Crescent Goldens was recommended to me there as well. It's at the top of my list at the moment. But that's just from research- which is no substitute for experience!

I'm down in south Florida, but there are a couple of goldens in my breed club that come from Crescent breedings that are really nice; the male is a champion and is in the golden retriever show dog hall of fame--got there young too! A joy to watch in the show ring.

The other one is a female, a young pup who took a Best In Specialty Sweepstakes win at her very first show!!! She has a promising career ahead, I would say. Very lovely puppy. I also had the opportunity to speak to Yvonne Sargent when she entered her top champion, Chant, in my breed club's show and I was very impressed with her love and dedication to the breed. Chant had taken top prize at our show earlier that afternoon and he was majestic. I realize you are probably not looking for a show pup but breeders who are active and successful at all sorts of shows are generally more knowledgeable (IMHO) and can provide a puppy buyer with all sorts of support throughout the pup's life. Hope this all helps.

Thanks, everyone for your help! We have made a decision to get a little girl from the Dew litter of Delmarva Goldens in Maryland! Jesse is the dad and Shine is the mom - we are very excited!!!
Thanks for information

This is a delayed response but I found this information very useful. I'm looking into Eldorado Goldens. Thanks!
Chris has been breeding and showing for many, many years. Her dogs have been successful in a lot of different venues and she is involved in a lot of different things with her dogs.

Best of luck in your search!

I see that you have chosen a Delmarva puppy. Congratulations!

For what it's worth, the Eldorado website says, "My puppies are raised in my home and go through a complete socialization program including imprinting." The AKC Breeder of Merit award is probably important, too.

By the way, I have no connection at all to Eldorado, but might be interested in one of their pups someday.

All the best,
Lucy
